I wish I had written this
The American Thinker ^ | 3 29 05 | Jack Kemp

The Democrats who used to produce things -- cars, steel, and foodstuffs -- are being replaced by those who produce fads and fashion, things people enjoy but don't need. Societies need teachers, soldiers, engineers, and mechanics; they need people who drill for oil and fix cars; people who understand war and politics.

No one needs sitcoms, movie reviews, handbag designers, gossip columnists, or professors of gender construction, but this superfluous cadre is becoming the core of the party of Truman and Roosevelt, an alliance of the superficial and trivial, along with the hopelessly poor. Call it the FDR coalition, minus the South, minus the farmers, minus a large part of labor, which has been weakening, and seeing the nonpublic sector part of its membership go over to voting Republican.

This is not a national coalition, but it does know the best stores and best restaurants, and knows where to go for good hair. Noemie Emery's article in the Weekly Standard on the subject is great.

Movies are now more profitable than steel as a U.S. industry. A hand bag designer makes more than a car mechanic.

People tend to go where the money is...

This guy is obviously uninformed. How can anyone go through life without deconstructionism or queer theory?

"or professors of gender construction"

No, but you will need professors for teaching, engineering, doctors, lawyers, dentists, architects, etc. Do away with Universities and colleges and you can kiss your country's a$$ goodbye, through and through.

The rule that many farmers understand is that people will pay for what they WANT and resist paying for what they NEED.

I agree, but we have already done that- universites are not 'teaching' anymore- they are indoctrinating liberal-think.

Democrats are largely the part of the population most directly supported by government spending. IE govt workers, educational establishment, etc.

Heh, so true. Just look at our economy today... we're producing nothing of substance (just a lot of hot air). This country has been transformed from a powerful industry-based economy to a service-based one. We import everything and have inusrmountable deficit. It's just the matter of time before we crash and burn. Thanks, W.

Kemp presuming to speak about working folks- there's a laugh.

Mr. Free-trade has destroyed wages for laborers. He has no loyalty to lower income Americans.

He's a slimeball. IMO

The trends you cite began long before W stepped into office and will continue long after he leaves.

"Mr. Free-trade has destroyed wages for laborers. He has no loyalty to lower income Americans. "

Many many many economic studies have been done that prove the tremendous economic benefits to USA from trade liberalization.

About 25% of our GDP is directly attributable to lower tariffs rates over the years.

And I like movies. I’m glad somebody makes them.

"Heh, so true. Just look at our economy today... we're producing nothing of substance (just a lot of hot air). This country has been transformed from a powerful industry-based economy to a service-based one."

Not so... our industrial production is higher than it has ever been. Moreover the 'service' sector includes very high-value technology, financial and knowledge/entertainment industries that create a lot of value from non-manufacturing companies ...

eg what Microsoft creates is not 'substance' but its not 'hot air' either, it is more valuable than anything a manufacturing factory could produce.

" We import everything and have inusrmountable deficit."

nonsense, we produce $11 trillion worth of goods.

...and video games are more profitable than movies (though many are made overseas).

If it's any consolation, America's popular culture is the world's popular culture. That's our main expert right now. When the Ukrainians went to create a protest song over the recent elections, the song that they came up with was a hip-hop song.

I miss the old industries, too. But the fact of the matter is, they are not coming back.
