It isn't just Iran we're looking at here. India is a concern although relations are friendlier. But air bases in Afghanistan give us an avenue into the heartland of China should war break out over Taiwan.

I see you are a reader of Asia Times.
I find Asia Times a very useful look into "New Class" Chinese thinking, although, of course, one must always ask oneself, "Why are they writing this? Who are they trying to reach? What is the real meaning of what they are saying? What does this tell me about this fellow's interior life, his social groupthink?"
Of course, I have been reading this stuff for decades, cutting my teeth on Soviet materials, and to "read between the lines", also known as "reading the tea leaves" is my everyday life.
