70:30 Chance of N. Korean Nuclear Test This Year?

Nuclear forecast

Amid the Bush administration's tough talk toward North Korea, a new fear is emerging: Could Pyongyang test a nuclear weapon this year? Some insiders think so. "Knowing Kim Jong Il 's track record for brinksmanship, I'd bet on it," says Larry Wilkerson , who worked the North Korea issue as former Secretary of State Colin Powell 's chief of staff. "If we don't resume negotiations, I'd give it a 70-30 chance." The CIA is not predicting anything imminent. But then again, it missed India's nuke test in 1998. "The only thing that would preclude this," says Wilkerson, "is if they don't have a bomb."

More to the point ... what are the odds of these boneheads blowing themselves up ... of course it would still be Bush's fault.

I'd also give 70-30 odds that if PRK lobs any more test
missles into the Pacific, the Navy will use the occasion
to test the ABM capabilities of the uprated Standard missle.

Will they or won't they test?

I don't think they will.

I think that North Korea is the perfect for us to test a nuclear weapon...

Yep, gotta test enough to make sure that they get a full representative sampling of our arsenal.

Side point, but Larry Wilkerson is my bet for the Novak/Plame connection if the source is from the State Dept.

Of course, must be thorough, can't cut corners ... that would be a misrepresentation to NK and they deserve to know everything ... MUWAHAHAHA

How about waiting til I leave Korea. I'm only 35 miles fron NK and it might get a little uncomfortable here if we did.

Can they test, or can they not? If they do, then (thank) you S(l)ick Willie and Peanut Farmer.

I don't think the North Koreans have enough nerve to "pull the tiger's tail" via a nuclear test.

But maybe they are crazy enough...

"How about waiting til I leave Korea. I'm only 35 miles fron NK and it might get a little uncomfortable here if we did."

Yes, I believe NK has 10,000 artillery pieces aimed at SK. I worry more about that than the nukes. Severe damage to Seoul and SK will involve the US in both war and peace.

I'd rather stir up a revolution in NK than nuke them. They seem to be getting ripe for that sort of thing.

If we HAVE to nuke them, let's use neutron bombs along the border to wipe out the artillery and use SOF to take 1) Pyongyang 2) the nuke facilities.

I'm sure there are already plans in place.

Remember the US tested ONE bomb before using TWO in WWII. The plutonium style bomb used on Nagasaki was never tested.

I feel they MUST test to have credibility as a nuclear power. As the article said, the only thing that would prevent them is if they can't assemble one.
