Our colleges and universities are a hotbed of anti-Americanism. To many professors, this world would be better if there were no USA. Thanks to No Indotrination dot org for providing the website that outs the scumbags who earn a good living while bashing America and indoctrinating students in their classrooms.

Course: MCOM 583: Public Opinion and Propaganda |
Course Catalog Description: The study of propaganda theory and methods. Opinion-making processes in government, political parties, pressure groups and various societal institutions. The role of mass media in public opinion formation. [This is a GRADUATE-level course in Mass Communications.] |
Professor: Michael McGuire |
Required? No, purely elective |
Comments: The class wasn't so much a discussion of public opinion and propaganda, as much as it was an "I hate George W. Bush, G.W. Bush is a fascist, Christians are morons" type class. A significant portion of our 3-hour classes were devoted to Dr. McGuire's off-topic and out-of-control rants about Republicans, George W. Bush in particular. He was so vehemently passionate in his hatred for Pres. Bush that it seemed as if his hatred was personal. His tone became violent on a few occasions, and his emotions seemed out of control. It was unprofessional, and at times, disturbing. He also once said that Dick Cheney and John Ashcroft are more evil than Nazis and should be put to death. He basically said these things as if they were true. Students got the sense that these statements weren't open for discussion unless you agreed with him. The class was supposed to be "the study of propaganda theory and methods, opinion-making processes in government, political parties, pressure groups and various societal institutions and the role of mass media in public opinion formation." None of that was studied, although reading material for the second half of the semester came close. Im not sure Dr. McGuire intentionally used the class as a pulpit to promote his personal crusades, but one could come away believing that. I didnt get my moneys worth. Most of the other students, who were hardly conservatives, felt the same way. |
Discussion Bias: Excessive |
Comments: ULM endorses the AAUP statement on Academic Freedom (http://www.ulm.edu/academicaffairs/academicfreedom.htm). One statement from this document reads, "Institutions of higher education are conducted for the common good and not to further the interest of either the individual teacher or the institution as a whole. The common good depends upon the free search for truth and its free exposition." Dr. McGuire didnt adhere to those standards. One of the students asked Dr. McGuire if anyone with an opposing viewpoint could feel free to speak. He responded they could. Yet when I did, he made it clear, through both verbal and non-verbal language, that I should pipe down. The man would only allow those students that agreed with his views to speak freely. Once, when I disagreed with something he said, he told me to "Shut up!"...........No, he didn't tell me, he barked and yelled it at me. He also referred to me, and only me, because I was the only person espousing conservative views in class, as "boy," when I was being lectured for dare having an opposing viewpoint. I felt talked down to many times, as if I were an idiot who needs lecturing. He once went on and on about Bush stealing the 2000 election in Florida. I jumped in and said the Democratic Party was able to throw out the votes of one million military members in that state (people that usually vote Republican in droves) because of a silly technicality (Bush won Florida by 537 votes). So, Bush won fair and square. He let me talk, but his expression indicated he wanted me to stop talking.....and this was before he pounded his fist on the table. He had a very nasty tone toward me as well when stifling me, "the class conservative." While I have had many highly opinionated liberal professors in my 6 years of college (I just completed my master's degree), these other professors encouraged a wide spectrum of views, making me comfortable to express my opinions.........but not in this course. Outside class, to be fair, he was very cordial and friendly to me. The same applies for times in class when we werent discussing politics. |
Readings Bias: Noticeable |
Comments: We read two books. The first was very interesting and had no political bias as far as I could tell, unless you think society has been harmed by the advent of television. The second book, "The Social Construction of Reality," [Berger, et. al] seemed to have no political bias (other than advocating atheism in the end), and was written nearly 40 years ago. |
General Comments: Dr. McGuire is a visiting professor at ULM for this 2003-2004 school year, and I certainly don't want this posting to reflect poorly on the school or communications department. I have a great relationship with the department head and the other, permanent, professors. McGuire is supposed to be gone in May, but I'm sure he'll be spewing his vile at another university come September. That is why I think it is important that I post my experiences now.......... With that said, I have nothing personal against the man and sincerely wish him the best in life. |

I don't know, Mike. He is apparently no longer at that University, and I can't find any new info. Sorry that I blew your chance to teach at the university level. I guess you will just have to be satisfied to keep killing the bad guys for us. :)

Right!
My only claim to infamy is a Communist nun cousin who worships Fidel and Cesar instead of Jesus.
At least this Bozo is not related to me. :)

From the first 'comment' it sounds to me as though the professor was unintentionally providing an example of the very thing the class was supposed to be about.
The students who didn't call him on it should be given an F for failing to notice.
