If the laws of Florida allow for the murder of an innocent, helpless woman, then the laws of America must be enforced.
And it wouldn't work. Greer has already shoved aside stronger challenges than this one.
Like a poster already said, the only real action left would be for Jeb or George to send in goons and somehow justify it later. Clinton tried to foist a bogus search warrant on us. I imagine either Bush could get away with it - but do we really want the executive, at either the state or federal level, to continue the Clinton Elian precedent?
This is a state issue, not a federal one.
Just so.
In order to open a criminal investigation - you have to have substantiated evidence of a CRIME BEING COMMITTED. While there are a lot of suspicions - that is unfortunately not substantiated evidence.
Opening an investigation is not the job of the Gov. It's the job of the State's attorney general. Since there were people in the State attorney general's office who shut down one of the two investigations years ago .. I doubt the attorney general's office will be doing any investigating any time soon.
Florida residents were more interested in going to the beach than in finding out what their govt officials were up to. They now have a horrible mess on their hands and want absolution by DEMANDING the Gov do someting. Puhleeeeeeze!
Slavery was also outlawed specifically by the Constitution. The events in Florida are still within the normal realm of state powers.
Jeb Pilate has already washed his hands and Gov. Greer is smiling.
I've always felt that way about the case, I see nothing wrong the the w/the courts erring on the side of life, in fact they should have never strayed from that side, but I don't feel they should've made the desicion on the feeding tube, but about guardianship. Maybe there would have been a better chance of her living if thats what the case would've been about. But, then, again, you never know w/the courts.
An innocent woman is being murdered by startion/dehydration and you say there is no crime being committed? Hello?
Satan was smiling on Friday, too.
Wow, "dirtbag" gets deleted by a mod? You've got some pull there. I've seen a lot worse.
A long time before slavery was abolished President Abraham Lincoln made some hard, unpopular choices allowed him constitutionally. And it worked.
What if President Bush intervened for Terri? What would that change in the laws of the State of Florida? Nothing. A week later, a month later, someone else would get the plug pulled in a similar manner, and this time there won't be millions of people to make a ruckus. If all these folks are really serious about preventing this from happening again, they need to quit attacking those who are saying this is a state problem and fix the problem in their respective states - by lobbying their representatives to change the laws that allow this kind of thing to happen.
I think, according to that article, opening up a criminal investigation and granting clemancy are two separate options. The latter would probably get struck down by the Florida Supreme Court, since sick people in this society argue that this is "mercy" rather than "punishment". I mean this whole case is based upon definitions...by defining someone as PVS, by definition they cannot respond to their parents and plea for help, neither can they leave the stated of being in PVS. By defining the sentence as mercy rather than punishment, they can carry it out without due process. But it's all just labels, dictated by society. This is the scary reality!
As for the first option, creating a criminal investigation, that does sound like an OPTION I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN! I heard that, not surprisingly, Michael Schiavo wants to have Terri's body immediately cremated immediately following her death. Obviously, to destroy any evidence that could convict him of murder! It is beyond criminal, it is sinister!
I think the only reason Jeb isn't acting is that he's afraid of political fall-out that would hurt not only him but the whole Republican Party. If he were to act any further to save Terri, it would only enrage certain liberals...it might flip Florida into becoming a blue state. On the other hand, I would argue that the damage has already been done, with that regard, as people are so appalled that their leaders would actually try to intervene to save someone's life.
At this point it comes down to faith: Doctors believe that there is still time for Terri to be saved, but there is no certainty. She may not be PVS, and may be able to regain enough cognitive functionality with proper treatment that she can point fingers at the villains, but there is no certainty. God may open people's eyes to see this case for what it really is -- murder, plain and simple -- but there is no certainty.
If you believe that God will reward one righteous person who steps forward to save Terri's life, at all costs, then there is only one thing to do.
He also had suspended haebas corpus and did a lot of other extra-constitutional stuff.
However, there is a better action - work to change laws in your state that could allow this to happen again. It's a lot more time-consuming than demanding federal action - but it will be far more effective over time than the temptation of demanding federal action.
President Bush would never have to intervene if Jeb would do his damn job and get some balls.
Search as I may, I cannot find one, NOT ONE post by someone who will say that they know that George Bush or Jeb, would do exactly the same thing if it were their own daughter! And, that it would be perfectly fine (don't forget those laws) to do so. It would seem that there would be at least a few. That is telling, in and of itself.
I guess we are supposed to belive that their (the Bushes) "family values" would see them visiting their loved one, cupping her cheeks, telling her that they love her, etc, but when our sacred laws decided that they would have to starve her, they would do a complete turn-around and say that there was nothing else they could do? How many out there really believe this?
And, if it did, what would you think of either of these men?
What should have been good for them, should have been just as good for Terri.
And, all those who are posting " the law is the law " arguments on this site, must surely be in the category of being able to do the same to their OWN daughters. To come on this site and pose these fallacious, intellectually vacant arguments about the sanctity of our precious judicial system, in a matter like this is sickening, to say the least.
Looking for the first liberal reporters to ask George and Jeb this very question, and I am not normally their biggest fan.
-He chose to obey the law and not act like Janet Reno.-
If it was a member of his family or a friend's family he'd be all over it.
