... D.C. police department has a Latino Liaison Unit, an Asian Liaison Unit and a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Unit, but unlike the other specialized squads, the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit deals with the half-truths and complexities of sexuality.
When Parson teaches officers at the police academy how to deal with the gay community, he starts with Gay 101. They are blue-collar, white-collar, French collar and no collar. They may withhold the whole truth from you because their lives often are shrouded in necessary fictions. They might be uncomfortable dealing with you because they have been humiliated by you in the past.
But out on the streets, as on this winter night, Parson is miles beyond Gay 101...
The small rainbow flags they wear on their uniforms are their passports inside. Once inside, they must walk a razor's edge, balancing protection and empathy with old-school, lock-'em-up law enforcement.
" 'We are here for you' is part of our message," Parson says. "But so is, 'You are under arrest.' "
"Lucy, I'm home," Parson yells as he walks through the door of the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit office. After working out of cramped desks at police headquarters, the unit recently moved into a spacious office off Dupont Circle. The boxes are still being unpacked. There are case files, uniforms, a police radio and, "Queer Eye" indeed, lamps from Ikea. There are four officers on the squad, and like the gay community itself, they are still working out their identity. When Parson wants to hang a rainbow flag outside the office, one squad member protests.
"Gay, gay, gay," Officer Joe Morquecho says. "Why does everything have to be gay?"
"Gee, I don't know, Joe," Parson says, "maybe because we're the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit?"

(sound of muffled WTF?)
Get a load of this.
How about just a unit devoted to criminals?????? Are they police now just a giant support group for people who can't figure out what the hell they are?
Do they patrol in specially-outfitted Subarus?
Do you mean Lesbarus?
Note to self:
Never, EVER go to D.C. again.
I've seen obvious homosexual men driving them, too. What made it obvious? Well, there was a rainbow flag sticker on the back, and the driver and the passenger were lip-locked during stops.
Weird. Good cars though. I used to own one. Got a lot of disappointed looks when they saw my beautiful wife and kids.
It just keeps getting better...
So...wait...lemme get this "straight".
In their never-ending, loud-mouthed, in-your-face attempt to be treated as EQUALS - they need their own police unit?
Proof positive that they're not interested in true equality, only special rights & priveleges.
What's with the Sabaru thing? I've never heard anything about Subaru = gay, hell now I have to be aware of what car I drive so I don't get rear ended at a stop light!
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Read the article and you can see that they are a breeding ground for criminal activity. This is basically like a gang unit where they are devoting themselves to a specific group of criminals and while their activities are not criminal 24 hours a day, they are more likely to be committing crimes than other upscale neighborhoods being patrolled.
LOL. I like this guy.
Having a special police unit to deal with "gay and lesbian" issues is nothing new. We used to call it the Vice Squad.
Coming soon to NBC, Law and Order: GLLU. "In the criminal justice system, there are bad guys, good guys, and then there are guys who just like guys. These are their stories."
This is DC. Not many rednecks around here. You have to go into Virginia and Maryland for that.
Pay attention to the next few Subarus you see, maybe a pattern will emerge. ;^)
When I was young, me and my redneck buddies used to go down to Georgetown all the time. City people were so much fun.
