There's a great little sarcastic slam in this story that American readers might not pick up on. In one paragraph Steyn writes:
"When the Patricias were killed three years ago, Svend Robinson, the Palestinian suicide bombers’ favourite gay infidel, huffed indignantly: “If Canadian troops cannot be certain that they’re not going to be fired on by Americans, we have no business being there.” Sorry: nothing is 100 per cent risk free; ask Canadian jewellers."

- Svend Robinson is the Canadian federal politician equivalent of Barney Frank. Self righteous and left leaning, he's been the darling of the Canadian MSM for years. About a year back Svend attended some sort of trade fair on the west coast and was caught trying to steal a very valuable diamond ring from a jewellers display. He had to resign his Parliamentary seat in disgrace, but I believe the authorities, true to form, dropped the attempted theft charges. So when Steyn writes, " Sorry: nothing is 100 per cent risk free; ask Canadian jewellers."; it is this incident he is referring to.
