A study released this week confirms what you probably already knew: America has almost no control over its own borders. There are now more than 10 million illegal aliens living in this country. That's about two million more than lived here in 2000, when George W. Bush became president.
How did this happen? Because just about nothing has been done to stop it. Among those who run this country, there is a bipartisan consensus that illegal immigration is a good thing. Republicans want cheap labor. Democrats want new voters.
There's no defending these positions, and the interest groups that control our immigration policy don't even try. Instead they attack the motives of their opponents.
Suggest hiring more immigration cops, and they'll accuse you of wanting to quote, "militarize the border." Propose cracking down on businesses that employ illegals, and they'll spin an Orwellian picture of midnight roadblocks and internal IDs. We don't want a police state, they'll say. As if there's something authoritarian about controlling who comes into your country. And of course, no matter your argument, they'll imply that you're a bigot. At a meeting this week with Mexican President Vicente Fox, George W. Bush seemed to spend most of his time apologizing for America's unenlightened views on illegal immigration. In other words, that the average person is against it. At one point, Bush referred to anti-immigration activists as "vigilantes." Needless to say, President Fox vigorously agreed.

I had my views changed about illegal immigration after 911. So did most other Americans. However, no one in DC, except a few, have had the same realization.
Oh, no, not in cahoots. Lefties still stomp down on Big Biz for not paying every illegal worker $12 an hour.
Tucker, as usual, has added nothing. Here's something interesting I read recently on the subject. It was a profile of a repeat illegal who is coming to California to work for $16/hr trimming shrubs because he can only make $10/hr in Mexico. Doesn't the idea that these are jobs that Americans won't do fall apart when we are talking about $16/hr? What are we paying for unemployment payments?
Bush has no plan and could care less about our security. If he was serious about protecting innocent Americans he would stop this illegal invasion. Innocent blood is on his hands alone.
Penalize employers
Take away the benefits
Put up a wall (optional if the first two are enforced)
For awhile I thought the article was about government regulation. That would apply to the title too.
Easier way to stop Illegals and we can get the loonie left support as well. Every Illegal Alien who works for an American company can sue the company that uses their labor (catching the Wal-Marts) for four times the amount that an American would get paid. We give the company's 30 days to purge the illegals off their rolls, after that Open Season.
Yikes! maybe we should have checked in at Democraticunderground.com for the latest talking (correction "Mynah") points.
All of a sudden there is another spontaneous rush of "disenchanted republicans who voted for Bush" who somehow have come to and ,like Rip Van Winkle, have discovered that "Bad Ol Illegal Immigration".
Wait till you hear their agenda for fixing things.
One of my best friends in my small West Texas town started out as an illegal alien twenty-two years ago. He's now an American citizen who has sent all seven of his children to college, they all graduated with honors.
Four are doctors, one is some kind of high-dollar engineer, and the last two opened up a civil law practice but they specialize in cases involving "indigent" Americans -- and them and their five siblings foot the bills.
My friend lives in one of the nicer homes in our town. He's active in local politics and unlike the stereotype some assign to Hispanics, he's a devout Republican Conservative. He only has a second-grade education but he's one of the smartest people I've ever met . . . as is his wife. But then his wife graduated from Junior High before she quit school.
My friend's occupation? He mows lawns.
I'm disabled and when I don't feel like mowing my lawn, after he stops by every morning to check on me as he does EVERY day, without asking, he mows my lawn for free -- just as he does EVERYchurch in our town. He says . . . "The Lord shouldn't have to pay to keep the beauty he's given us manicured."
At last count, he has four "teams" of mowers . . . all relatives, or people down on their luck, or probation'ers from the court. Yes, he's thought of so highly that our local and county judges will sometimes give a person probation if they'll agree to work for my friend for a certain period of time.
But even though he has four teams and he doesn't personally do much of the mowing anymore . . . except for my lawn and all the churches' lawns . . . he inspects every lawn mowed and I've heard a simple shake of his head is devastating to his workers.
No one wants to disappoint Papa Joe.
I'm as anti-illegal immigration as anyone, but stories like my friend's gives me pause before I blindly jump on the bandwagon.
What makes the difference to me?
If any illegal immigrant ONLY comes here to partake in the bounty available, to send it home to another country, to not give anything back to those who have made this bounty possible, to not pay due respect to our laws, customs, and heritage, then they're not welcome.
But if they're only unlawful act was coming here, if they're trying everything in their power to become an American citizen to rectify their misdeed, if they're making a positive difference in their community, I tend to cut these more slack than others do on this forum.
We've always been a big Melting Pot. The difference now is instead of groups of the Irish, the Italians, the Germans, etc. moving here to start new lives in a new homeland . . . we have hordes of robbers from Mexico, with a wink of approval from the Mexican government, stealing into our country under the cover of darkness, and doing nothing but skimming the bounty paid for by American citizens. They use our medical facilities knowing their bills won't be paid. They abuse our social systems with impunity. Not all, but most of them have only one intention -- to milk us dry, then to scamper back home until it's time for their next excursion north.
The Mexican Government is to blame for this as much as anyone. Vicente Fox is no friend of the U.S. This is where GW and I part company.
Those who come to the U.S. for better lives for themselves and their children . . . and they're willing to pay the price to become American citizens . . . I say they should be welcomed with open arms. Those who only come to steal should be put in jail with the bill sent to Vicente Fox.
If we were to reform our immigration bureau so it works well, people like the man you describe could apply to come legally and be approved. The undesirables could be screened out. That is the best solution. Ask your friend about the disadvantages to him of being illegal. There are a lot.
