It's the mirror thing. It goes: what we see in others is no more than a mirror image of ourselves. It's a very old idea going back to when mirrors were made of metal and had to be polished frequently in order to see clearly. Thus the expression, 'polishing the mirror'; when someone is on your case they are polishing the mirror.
