Transcript: The Easter Bunny Under Attack
FOXNews.com ^ | 3/16/2005 | Bob Beckel

This is a partial transcript from "Hannity & Colmes," Mar. 16, 2005, that has been edited for clarity.

BOB BECKEL, GUEST HOST: Welcome back to "Hannity & Colmes." I'm Bob Beckel, filling in for Alan Colmes and stealing Sean Hannity's lines!

Tonight, there may be a new endangered species to add to the national register -- the Easter Bunny. Several south Florida shopping malls have renamed the large, white rabbit that's handing out plastic eggs to kids with names that don't refer to the Christian holiday, like "Peter Rabbit" and "Garden Bunny".

Is this political correctness going too far? Joining us now is the communications director of American Atheists, David Silverman.

David, what's up?

DAVID SILVERMAN, AMERICAN ATHEISTS: Hey, thanks for having me back on the show. ...

The Garden State of Mindlessness

Oh, great. Just in time for the holidays -- several South Florida Malls (remember Florida?) are changing the Easter Bunny's name to the "Garden Bunny" to circumvent any possible mental and emotional trauma that exposure to a Christian noun once a year may have on the children of atheists, or on the atheists themselves who insist on syphoning even more fun and innocence away from their children.

How special. The Garden Bunny. It sounds like some sort of rabbit and mixed greens pita sandwich.

Here comes Peter Cottontail
Hoppin' down the Garden trail
Hippity hoppity ...
...
Usurpation of a pagan holiday by evil Christians
is on it's waaaaaaaay

Sigh.

On that note, I'm off to take Holy Week a bit more seriously.

What is so funny about this is that for years, CHRISTIANS have complained about the name "Easter" associated with Ressurection Day, because Easter was a pagan holiday grafted onto the Resurrection Day date by the Romans trying to "suck in" pagan Romans after Constantine.

What I find absurd about all this is that the atheist thinks the Easter Bunny is a Christian concept, and that is why he's targeted the Easter Bunny. Even more absurd, they had Hannity take him on, attacking the atheist on that point, and there implying that Hannity agreed that the Easter Bunny is Christian. Surely Hannity knows that the Easter Bunny has nothing to do with Christianity.

The Easter Bunny is scarcely a Christian noun. It's pre-Christian by a number of centuries.

Like today, it's a matter of people wanting to have it all. They want something new but refuse to give up the old. Oh, and any reason to party....

it is a lot more than that...
easter is just one more variation of Astarte worship.
the babylonian goddess of fertility - hence the eggs & bunny thing.

This has nothing to do with Easter or the Easter Bunny. This is just one more bigoted shot at cleansing Christianity by the secularists. They want us to be afraid of mentioning anything that might be remotely related to our Faith in public. They aren't trying to save poor helpless children from being offended by a reference that might possibly imply the Ressurection of Christ. These stupid malls are just capitulating to these threats. If these were called garden bunnies to begin with, the secularists would attack them saying that they represent the holiday (whatever you want to call it) that is tied to the Ressurection. I can't wait for them to protest the Spring Equinox because the date for Easter is dependent upon it. Pretty soon we will have legislation proposed by some maniacal secularist to outlaw the Spring Equinox in an attempt to stop the celebration of Easter which is so offensive.

The Lord works in mysterious ways, don't He?

You gotta love His sense of humor.

Hey, if they can stop the Equinox from happening, I'm not going to argue.

Now that O come to think about it, I've heard and read that the Romans like to use images of cocks to represent fertility. Perhaps easter eggs and bunnies are supposed to be a bit more family friendly. Or, to represent the mother god gaia, or feminaziism, or heck, I don't know. It's still Easter, Terri's still dying, I've got my church work to do, and we'll go on.

Personally, I dislike the Easter Bunny. It detracts from the spirituality of the holiday. Let them beat up the Easter Bunny all they like.

I want every secularist and atheist to back off attacks on Christian holidays and for these hypocrital SOBs to stop making money off of religious holidays.

If they won't back off, then every atheist or secularist hypocrite should made to give back any holiday pay that they may have received for taking Christmas or any other religious holiday off. If they used their own leave time, there's no problem.

Otherwise I would do a Clintonesque retroactive tax on these scumbags and make them give back all Christmas holiday pay that they may have received dating from the Supreme Court case banning school prayer.

This "tax" would apply to any government "worker" or any worker working for an employer receiving federal, state, or local funds of any kind. Yeah, I know it's unconstitutional, but I'd like to see the scumbags squirm for once.

I grew up with the Easter Bunny. It is a family tradition. As a child. I remember church as being a lot of sermon I had to squirm through and a lot of words I had to memorize. Although Palm Sunday was my favorite religious holiday as a child, Easter, the Bunny and hiding eggs was a joyous celebration. Call it overflow from the real celebration of the Resurrection, if you like. But the Resurrection is a difficult concept to appreciate at the age of six and Easter is so much easier for a child to remember with a basket of goodies.

My unndstanding is that there is also some connection with the Egyptaian Ausar (Osiris).

Maybe I overspoke. I'm not opposed to the Easter Bunny. I just don't think there is any reason for a Christian to fight a cultural war over the Easter Bunny. Let the atheists waste their time and effort going after this red-herring. I'll be in church tomorrow.
