Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.
Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.
For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''
In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.
''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.
''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''
The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

Agreed. Jeb will never be President. Might have been different had he shown courage and character.
I love newsmax!
Actually, as the Chief Executive Officer of the State of Florida, it is his responsibility to execute the laws of the state - those laws being made by representatives of the people, and ruled upon by judges.
He doesn't make law, and he doesn't get to pick and choose what laws he executes.
Ergo, his hands are tied.
"I know what you mean about the crazies and fanatics and nutjobs who make us look bad, as the press eats that up and loves to paint us all as religious wackos, and it really infuriates me. We never get good press anyway in the MSM and that just reinforces stereotypes of a bunch of religious right-wing loonies."
It would help if a bunch of them right here on this website would stop acting like, as you said, religious right-wing loonies. Anyone who reads these Schiavo threads are going to get that opinion real fast.
What?
I agree. As much as it pains me, how can the same conservatives who were mad in 1993 and 2000 (Waco and Elian) now want either Federal or State Troops to come in? Yes, it is tragic that a woman is getting railroaded by a runaway activist judge, but Jeb Bush is limited by the law. He has tried (as far as I know) every legal loophole available, and they have not worked. Sending in state/ Federal troopers in would have set the conservative movement back 40 years.
this is a Christian nation and Bush is a Christian, but he is NOT a Christian leader......this is not a theocracy....we are battling one right now.....I'm not disputing the bible either but US laws are OUR laws and must be obeyed......hell, the bible teaches us not to let any man enter our house that is not carrying the word of the lord......hell, you tell me you don't let people in your house without a bible.......shame on you heathen.... you can feel, think and chose to believe how you wish....I do the same, am Christian but translate it like you.....and guess what....God will decide and judge accordingly.....OK with you......????????
Well, it would seem we've solved the riddle of whether Jeb Bush will ever be POTUS.
Unless Terri shocks us all with her incredible will to live, and manages to make it until the Governor and/or the President find their missing manhood.
If they only had the gonads, they could squash this tinpot probate judge like the bug he is in about two hours of concerted political effort.
"Exactly. Jeb Bush wouldn't even use a pooper-scooper in a July 4th parade, behind the white horse, unless his advisors told him he had the authority to do so."
LMAO!!!!!!!
It's as I suspected.
There might have been bloodshed, so the decision was made not to go in.
Maybe there should be some bloodshed. This is a culture war--it has been a cold one for the last fortysomething years, maybe its time for a hot war. Traditional American values v. the Culture of Death, the Culture of Satan, the Culture of Scientology. Traditional American values must emerge completely triumphant or America as we know it will be completley destroyed. Its Thermidor or Waterloo for American values... How the outcome of this passes determines which one it will be
"I am just warning everyone about what Jeb's responsibility is."
There is no problem warning everyone about what is Jeb's responsiblity, but Christians have a duty as well, and they are warned NOT to be deceived.
Christians do not act like liberal mobs, ever!
I take it you were educated elsewhere, then? Oooookay.
Well, you have been "warned".
Thanks, I was hoping I wasm't alone.
How clear do I have to make it to you?
Okay, I don't know what a Christian is!
Why don't you enlighten me?
LOL. Thanks.
