Pontius Pilate did not decide--he deferred to angry religious authorities meanwhile protesting that Jesus had done no wrong and did not deserve to die. I do think that if Pilate had said no and taken Jesus into Roman custody, Jesus' death would have been forestalled as he had not committed any crime under Roman law

Jesus said, "No one takes My life from me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have power to lay it down and the power to take it up again. This command is from My Father."

He had already told His disciples what was going to happen.

Pilate was just a player in the drama.

Even if he had released Jesus, he couldn't have forestalled his death.

I realize that the analogy is not exact, but, as I said, Jeb Bush's current dilemma is reminiscent of Pontius Pilate. I agree that had Pilate taken Jesus into Roman custody, Jesus would have eventually been killed, because the Romans could not have held him interminably and once released, the Jewish elders would have imposed their death sentence.

But, getting back to Terri's death sentence... Bush could take her into temporary custody for purposes of conducting an examination to determine her physical condition.
