For the same reason so many people treat doctors like Gods. Long ago, people NEVER questioned a doctor's opinion(s). We have still doctors whose feathers are ruffled when a patient asks for a second opinion...or third...too bad.
I'd ask as many doctors' opinions as possible, until I felt I'd had enough confirmation, before doing something drastic with myself or my children.
Gee, I've been misdiagnosed by a coupld of doctors in my lifetime! I no know and understand that you can't trust doctors and that they make mistakes.
I heard Michael Savage's stand in tonite (can't remember his name..) and he was referring back to an ambassador from the Netherlands who said 5 criteria must be met (all 5 no less) before euthanasia can even be considered there.. it turns out that euthanasia happy Netherlands is actually STRICTER than the US!
