ABOARD SAS FLIGHT SK984 — Sitting in the first-class cabin whisking him away from nine months detention in Japan, chess icon Bobby Fischer (search) on Thursday launched a rambling diatribe against the United States, calling it "an illegitimate country" that should be given back to the American Indians.

The reclusive Fischer — who is taking up residence in Iceland to avoid arrest in the United States — also unleashed his anger at Israel and likened President Bush (search) to a comic book character.

Fischer said he was "kidnapped" in Japan, and that Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi (search) were in cahoots trying to deprive him of freedom and return him to the United States, where he is wanted on criminal charges.

"Bush does not respect law," Fischer said

Why don't we just call Iceland and tell them we want him?

I heard on the radio this afternoon that we have an extradition treaty w/ Iceland.

Oh, yeah, why in the world would George W. Bush give enough of a crap about insignificant little Bobby Fischer to have him kidnapped. Dude, you play chess, cripes you don't even have to stand to do that.

Asked whether he thought he might find U.S. authorities more tolerant of him if he toned down his rhetoric, Fischer said he was too old to change.

"I grew up with the concept of freedom of speech. I'm too old. It's too late for me to adjust to the new world, the new world order," he said with a chuckle.

Well, he's right about that. Iceland won't extradite him, treaty or no - they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of granting him citizenship, otherwise. As long as he isn't stupid enough to fly to Los Angeles and demand that his possessions be returned, the matter will end here.

Bobby, thank God you came along... before you got here, the universe just didn't know who to revolve around.

Yeesh, I admit that a healthy self-image is important, but come on...

Why bother? He's insignificant and so was his crime. Let Iceland have him. He's not worth the time or the money to prosecute.

Mr Bobby Fischer should realize that just because one has the ability to speak freely does not mean it is wise to constantly do so.

This guy is so hilarious ... and irrelevant. I love how he indignantly proclaims that "Bush does not respect law," without a hint of irony.
