Chess legend Bobby Fischer arrived in Iceland on Thursday, hoping to avoid deportation to the United States by accepting an offer of citizenship from a country still grateful for its role as the site of his most famous match.
[. . .]
In the interview, he unleashed an angry diatribe against the United States.
"The United States is an illegitimate country...just like the bandit state of Israel - the Jews have no right to be there, it belongs to the Palestinians," said Fischer, whose mother was Jewish.
"That country, the United States, belongs to the red man, the American Indian...It's actually a shame to be a so-called American because everybody living there is...an invader."

Just proves that old saying, "Playing chess makes ya stupid." Think it was Aristotle made that saying up.
Afterall, the JOOOOOZZ are after him
I saw him on the news today. He came across looking like a bum and sounding like a nutjob. I call it accuracy in media for once.
Seems like he ate some weird brownies.
He came across like that because he IS a bum and a nutjob!
Iceland must be very proud of their new citizen.
I know. The guy looked strikingly like some of our local vagrants.
As far as I'm concerned, they can have him if they want him that bad.
Good.
With that attitude, they can have him. No great loss.
Just one more hero for the left. He called Bush and the Japanese PM "war criminals who should be hung" and claimed he was kidneapped.
There is nothing more American than hurting the Communists in the wallet, President Ronald Reagan proved that.
Good riddance.
Maybe Iceland will take in Ward Churchill, also. Seems these two guys have a lot in common.
I was once privately told by a conservative radio host that Iceland is the place to be for transferring flights when flying in Europe - stay a day or two, he advised, and enjoy some of the most beautiful women on earth! ;-)
So what. People should just lay off the guy, who is pretty disturbed. He did a great thing in his world championship matches during the Cold War. Who actually paid attention to chess before that? He's harmless and will never be in any position of power.
Didn't the Vikings take Iceland from the Inuit (eskimo)?
As I say, I think he broke the law and I'm not keen on that. But if they want him, and want him out of jail, bad enough to naturalize him...they can have him. I just think that little island is going to start feeling a lot smaller for them.
Last I heard, he was a rightwing nutjob, not a leftwing nutjob.
In any case, if Clinton was able to justify pardoning all the out-and-out criminals that he did, why can't someone pardon Fischer?
He's one of the greatest chess players of all time and the only things the Feds have against him is not paying taxes and playing some chess in Yugoslavia around the time we went in there for rather dubious reasons.
It's not against the law to be a nutjob and if he were pardoned it wouldn't hurt anybody.
"Last I heard, he was a rightwing nutjob, not a leftwing nutjob."
I can't say it enough. If you go far enough left or far enough right, you eventually meet you enemies as friends.
