Anyone who makes it through USMC boot camp is tough by anyones standards, regardless of what happens after wards. And if you think I'm just blowing smoke, ask Dan Rather :)
BTW - the guy on the left looks like the father of the kid who won a medal (Navy Cross?) and happened to be in Iraq as a civilian and was able to pin it on him. The Dad had been a Marine in Vietnam.
Reason I remember is that he appears to be my age, and before I read the article I was thinking how lucky he was to be over there. It was posted here on FR.

I didn't know that Captain Kangaroo was in the military. Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo) has passed away, therefore that's not him.
My bet is that it's Wilford Brimley.

Great picture. Unfortuntely when I hear "Army Corps of Engineers" I think of the people who arrest you when you fill in a puddle in your back yard.

LOL! Good that they're in Iraq then. They don't have puddles.

Ummm.....
How do they raise and lower that flag at the very top of the swords, where the two are joined???

But it's such a good story.

That story is false. Please click on the Snopes site for clarification

I believe Bob Keshan (Captain Kangaroo) was a Marine. I think he graduated from boot camp at the end of WW II.

I didn't know that Captain Kangaroo was in the military. You see any rank or branch insignia on those BDUs? I don't. They are likely Department of the Army and Corps of Engineers civilian employees, not soldiers. If not that, they must be reserve or guard. Some of those dudes are pretty old. I was one once and we had this master sergeant who was about 60 I think. (In fact he was the "first shirt", although the Air Force and Air Guard don't use that terminology, but he was the senior enlisted man in the squadron.)
