Why there? Why not the mall? Her friends house? The bowling alley? The pizza parlor?
And why did they think "taken"? Couldn't she have gone herself? Hopped a bus? Asked a friend?
There had to be some sort of indication that this could happen. A diary missive, an overheard phone conversation, maybe a threat by the daughter - "if you don't let me get one, I'll find a way..."
Who knows at this point?
