Someone's been reading the polls.

Methinks the congresscritters now see what a pig in a poke they bought. I also see that they're backing off the "nuclear option".

The repercussions will continue apace. I fear for SS reform now.

The GOP in congress chose to expend enourmous political capital here. What they didn't know is that it was a sucker bet.

And the idea that now the President or the Governor will now order TROOPS, fer the luvva Mike, to deal with this is delusional.

Oh, absolutely. I live in the Bible Belt; two days of discussion with people I do not know at the gym and Wal-Mart have convinced me that most people are opposed to this action by Congress. I haven't talked with anyone yet who thinks it's a good idea.

And have you read the article posted on FR last night about some state, forgot which one, is proposing legislation that any spouse who has been an adulterer will not be able to make life and death decisions for their spouse?

They are going to need a LOT of private detectives. And of course, more judges when rulings are appealed.

Not surprising, given that favorability of Congress isn't too high these days. Congress did the best they could do. Congress creates the courts, and they told the courts to look at the case.

Congress isn't the problem. It's the courts that are the problem.

The Republicans SHOULD HAVE SPENT ALL their political capital to save Terri. Terri's death will hurt them in 2006 & 2008. Bush won Ohio because the Conservative base came out. Now if the Republicans can't defend Terri's life, why vote for them.

the polls are shifting, as more information seeps through the MSM filter, the polls will shift further. Most people being polled still think this is a woman in a coma on a respirator. Its the Dems who are concerned on this issue, normally they would be chortling if they had a 2:1 public opinion in their favor on any issue. But they aren't, why? It the SCOTUS refuses to get involved (likely outcome), there will be weeks of media coverage of her death as she is slowly starved. And this issue will point out the imperial nature of the judiciary.

I can't blame Congress and the president for not going into "constitutional crisis" mode to save her, they have done the right thing so far in making this attempt, it was a noble effort (win or lose).

What I don't understand about all the "send in the troops" types is why they aren't demanding the same for every similar case in the country. The Schiavo case is only unusual in that it's a humdinger of a family feud. Why does she warrant all this attention from the crusaders, hucksters, lawyers, and politicians when there are plenty of other people slipping quietly away from precisely the same reason: removal of feeding tubes?

Well they seem to be a lets go into debt Congress? LOL

The problem is that this issue affects so many possible policy issues that they will never be ever to take the high ground without looking like hypocrites again. State rights for one.
