My mother died 9 years ago next month. She now lives in a nursing home due to having had a severe stroke. She was 61 and about to retire after working her whole life raising 7 kids. She lives in mental anguish over her cruel fate. She still has her mind, but her body will not work. She cries all the time about wishing she had died. This has taken a terrible toll on our family. She does not want to live, but she can take food and she has a strong heart. So she MUST live. I wouldn't 'euthanize' her. But if she were to have another stroke or heart failure, I don't want them to even try to revive her. And she has made this clear as well.
I think we have to examine whether we are using the terrible case of Terri Schiavo to make a larger point. If we are, shame on us. She doesn't deserve that.
If we don't use this case to make a larger point, shame on us.
As for your mother, she is healthy, but she does have the power to go on hunger strike until she dies. Why doesn't she?
Your Mom chooses life.
