The Tennessee coach broke Dean Smith's career victory record Tuesday night, getting No. 880 in the Lady Vols' 75-54 win over Purdue in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Summitt tied Smith at 879 with an easy win over Western Carolina in the first round Sunday night and passed the former North Carolina men's coach with another convincing victory. Summitt improved to 880-171, while Smith was 879-254 when he retired in 1997 after 36 years with the Tar Heels.
Top-seeded Tennessee (28-4), seeking its seventh national title under Summitt, advanced to face fourth-seeded Texas Tech in the semifinals of the Philadelphia Regional on Sunday.
Ninth-seeded Purdue (17-13) tried its best to stall Summitt's chase, hanging tough with the Lady Vols in the first half.
But Tennessee's defense was too much for Purdue...

My 13-year-0ld won 880 games of NBA Jam on his X-Box. That's just about as impressive as winning 880 games in girl's basketball. These teams play so far below the rim, they couldn't beat the boy's Chicago Public League champs. What a joke!
Oh, your team didn't make the playoffs, huh?
What "team" is that? I don't "have" a girls' team, and you couldn't pay me enough to watch "your" team. Here's a test from Bill Simmons, who writes for ESPN on how you can tell whether something is a legitimate sporting event: ask any guy if he would rather watch the event, or find a five-dollar bill on the street. With a girls' college basketball game, I guarantee you that 999 out of 1,000 would take the fiver over watching stocky chicks take set shots with their feet anchored to the hardwood. Case closed.
P.S. - The Vols will lose to UConn for the millionth time anyway.
Would you prefer if they spent their time whoring around campuses? I live in Green Bay and I enjoy watching UWGB girls basketball games. Just your opinion, that's all.
Nope. But I wouldn't pay to watch them do that, either.
I live in Green Bay...
My condolences.
..and I enjoy watching UWGB girls basketball games.
How nice! A moose bit my sister once.
Just your opinion, that's all.
An opinion! What an odd thing to find in an opinion forum!
Coach wins record 880 on floor now bearing her name

Thousands of fans came to Thompson-Boling Arena on Tuesday night to watch Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt win her record-setting 880th game.
But there was only one person in attendance who has been with her from the very beginning. And she was a surprise guest.

Speaking of surprises, UT had one of its own for Summitt, now the career wins leader among Division I basketball coaches. After UT defeated Purdue 75-54, UT officials announced the court at Thompson-Boling Arena will be named The Summitt.
UT President John Petersen and women's athletic director Joan Cronan made the presentation while the announcement was made over the P.A. system to cheering fans.
Hazel Head came to Tuesday's game after neighbors at home in Henrietta, Tenn., said they would stay with her ill husband Richard. They insisted she go to Knoxville.
Summitt's parents, usually fixtures at University of Tennessee Lady Vols games, have seen most of them on television this season because of health problems. Summitt's sister, Linda Attebery, also watched from the stands.
Head said she told her daughter, "I'm so glad to be here. And of course I cried."
Hazel Head has been watching her daughter either play or coach since she was in high school but said she never envisioned a night like Tuesday when Summitt began coaching.
"She always said 'I am going to play in the Olympics and she did. She's done well."
Summitt's mother, like most fans in the arena, felt confident UT could handle Purdue. One or two interviewed, however, added a "we hope" just to ward off any possible jinx.
"It's like a celebration," said Marilyn Giles, a UT grad at the game with her mother, Jo Henegar, a 1956 UT grad from Clinton, and friends Darla Gamble and Jane Currin. "It's one of those things where you know you are going to win and it's a special day."
It was Gamble's birthday and she indicated it was going to be a good one, "especially if Pat is going to win on my birthday."
"Not if," Henegar said. "When."
Gordon Price, from Wolcott, Ind., a former Purdue employee, was among the few present who preferred not to see the Lady Vols win. A longtime Boilermaker fan, he and his wife started going to games back "when we didn't have 200 people at our games."
But you could tell he really wasn't going to go home unhappy either way. "If Pat wins, we'll see a record," he said. "If we win, we'll see a nine (seed) beat a one."
Not too many people at Thompson-Boling were worried about that happening, though, and if they were, those worries soon eased as Tennessee hammered away at Purdue in the second half.
With 11 minutes to play, the roars kept rolling around the arena, getting louder and louder.
"We're going to win," Helen Deason, a UT fan from Chattanooga said before the game. "Of course."

What would be even cooler is if guys actually got the $5 to not watch women's basketball.
Let's see who was mentioned by name as attending the Tennesse-Purdue clash of the titan-esses:
Coach Summitt;
Coach Summitt's mom;
the U.T. Women's A.D.;
the U.T. president;
the coach's sister;
a hen party including a woman who went to U.T. 50 years ago, the woman's mom, and two of her gal pals;
a retired Purdue employee and his wife.
There you have a microcosm of the women's college sports crowd: out of the eleven mentioned, four who were paid to be there, three who were related to the people who were paid to be there, and four old women chattering in the stands about their bunions.
I LOVE this game!
Here's a test from me: Why don't you come to your own conclusions instead of looking to other people for answers?
html formatting ate my context!
Tennessee may not win another championship this year, but it won't be Connecticut that takes them out.
