DURHAM -- Mur Lafferty (and let's get this out of the way right now -- her actual name is Mary) scoffs at the idea that she's a podcasting pioneer. Why, hundreds of people were doing podcasts before she launched hers. Maybe even a thousand. Pioneer? Pshaw. Modesty is an endearing trait, and precision in language is appreciated. That said, Lafferty needs to get comfortable with this description. She's a podcaster at a moment when most of the world has yet to even hear the term. The overwhelming majority of us are still at the point where Lafferty was on Oct. 28, when she uttered these words during a talk with a friend:
"What's a podcast? I have no idea what you're talking about."
The fact that Lafferty remembers the date when she first heard the word suggests it was a turning point for her. Before that moment, she was a writer/mother with the unfulfilled ambition of hearing her essays broadcast on National Public Radio. Today she's a writer/mother who still can't get on NPR -- but who frets about it less because she's found a way to sidestep the overlords of broadcasting, who are just a little too stinkin' protective and possessive of the radio spectrum. Resources ("I'm a big fan of David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell," Lafferty says. "So I decided to start reading my essays [via a podcast]."
Using a microphone she bought at Target for $17, she creates a weekly audio program and stores it in her server. About 400 people are then notified by some new, super-duper software -- more about that in a moment -- that Lafferty has a fresh essay available. They tune in on their own schedule. At their own convenience. Whenever they want.
