I will never forget the first time I really noticed them. It was shortly after we had moved here (2 years next month) and I had lots of windows open...........I heard this really weird noise that spooked me and the dog and finally figured out that it was the sound of the wings of hundreds of the things.
Oh my gosh! Have you ever had one try to fly into the house? Our front door is mostly glass (one of those with 6 beveled glass panes), and about a month ago, there was a loud thud, and it was a bird who had flown into the glass, hitting it pretty hard - didn't kill her, but she was stunned! for the longest while. Just sat there, not moving, after she picked herself up from her crash.
