The problem I have is this: What If Terri Schiavo Wants To Die?

If I knew firsthand what she had or hadn't told Michael Schiavo 16+ years ago then I wouldn't have any problem deciding what I thought. But, none of us actually know, except for him, and anyone's opinion is merely that.

I know that there's no doubt that if I were her I would have wanted them to pull the tube many years ago. I wouldn't have really wanted them to ever even put it in (although perhaps for a limited while just in case I might've emerged). Even if I were in some minimally conscious state I would still want to die. Heck, even if I were in a somewhat alert and cognizant state I would want to die if it were to be under such circumstances. And, moreover, I certainly would not want to become such a national spectacle either.

But, I don't know what Terri would want, so I can't have a very passionate view without that information.

First, one has to remember that Judge Greer has never asked Terri if she wants to die. Remember that if you have ruled that she is in a vegetative state, then there is no point. The Judge relies solely on expert medical testimony.

Second, one has to keep in mind that multiple caregivers; i.e., doctors and nurses, are willing to testify that Michael Schiavo has blocked any attempt to provide rehabilitation for his "wife". Even to the point that it took a court order to provide antibiotics to treat her infections over the objections of her "husband".

Lastly, one should be informed that Michael Schiavo is the administrator of a > $1 Million medical settlement. He claims the money is gone, but who is to know? In other words, there were big bucks involved here. Even after the settlement he would not allow any rehabilitation treatment.

Hannity interviewed a rehabilitation doctor who spent 10 hours over three different visits with her. That doctor says that Terri understands English and responds. She is NOT in a brain dead state. He has witnessed Terri acknowledge and smile at the appearance of her mother. At the end of his last visit, he informed Terri that the view out of her window included squirrels and birds. Even though she has no far vision, she turned her entire body to peer out the window.

ANTIGUV WROTE: "But, I don't know what Terri would want, so I can't have a very passionate view without that information."

Maybe Terri should have a sharp knife put into her fist. If she stabs herself, we'll know she wants to die...and she will die, even sooner than Michael's satanic plot for her.

If she stabs Michael, however, we'll know she wants to live and wants Michael dead. Then, HE will die and SHE will have PROTECTION as a CRIMINAL.

What if in the last 16 years Teri became wiser and now wants to live? Why should a stupid decision made years ago when she was a teenage know it all and had no understanding of disability have more weight that what she feels now?

She may be dain bramaged, but she is not as stupid as she once was...

Terri Brother .................. Terri early on in a hospice

At this time Terri was able to chew and swallow and was learning to use the pararall bars to walk again...as soon as the malpactice law suit was won Michael Schiavo remember his wife wanted to die...so he would move her from one location to another every time they thought she was ready to start rehab again!

Her husband did not mention her wanting to die for 7 years - until after he won 1.2 million to support her and help pay for her therapy. Stangely, that is when all therapy and 'help' stopped.

But, I don't know what Terri would want,...

That's exactly the point! Why not err on the side of life than the side of death?!

One guy on Rush's show yesterday told Rush that being on a feeding tube is being on life support.

Then my next question would be this: Babies have no ability to feed themselves. It is up to the parents, or mother, to see that this is done. If the mother or parents neglect feeding the baby, the baby will die. Murder will have taken place. How is this different than denying Terri food and water?

It is also interesting to note that Terri is on a feeding tube because of the court. According to one of the doctors yesterday on Sean Hannity's show she can swallow, but the tube was court ordered.

I just don't understand anyone's logic that would favor starvation. Do we not have an obligation to protect the weakest among us?

More to the point: what if she doesn't...?

But, none of us actually know, except for him

Given that he's been accurately quoted as demanding, of the hospital staff, "Why won't that bitch die?": we may safely discount Michael Schiavo's not-until-seven-years-later recounting as being either a fair or an accurate one.
