I don't know.
To me, it looks like he released the tapes to sell the book, then a light clicked on in his head that it was a traitorous thing to do. I think he really is sorry, but he's is also going for a bit of sympathy like you say.

He knew what he was doing from the get go.
He even said that he was the one who chose what tapes to release to the public.
The dude pretty much got canned from working for the Senior GBUSH and the Current GBUSH.
And it was known that he was bitter about it.
And it was his own fault he got canned/told he was not needed as an advisor anymore.
His comments in public were, at times, not well thought out.

Yes, a light certainly did click on.....after he was peppered with questions regarding his motives, and his integrity was called into question and scrutinized. I believe he envisioned a lovefest over his book and did not expect such an overwhelming response of suspension and distrust amongst Americans
