PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) - The parents of Terri Schiavo asked a judge to reinsert the brain-damaged woman's feeding tube Monday, following an extraordinary political fight that consumed both chambers of Congress and prompted the president to rush back to the White House.
An attorney for Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, arrived at federal district court in Tampa and filed a request for an emergency injunction to keep their daughter fed.
It was assigned to U.S. District Judge James Whittemore, who was nominated to the court in 1999 by President Clinton. He set a hearing for Monday afternoon, according to a court Web site.
David Gibbs II, attorney for the parents, said the judge had sent a message saying he was reviewing the filings in the case.
During the hours leading up to the hearing, a few demonstrators appeared outside the federal courthouse, saying they were praying for Whittemore. Only a few people stayed outside the hospice where Terri Schiavo has been a resident, while others said they planned to return during the afternoon.
Earlier Monday, the House, following a move by the Senate, passed a bill to let the parents ask a federal judge to prolong Schiavo's life by reinserting her feeding tube. President Bush, who rushed back to Washington from his Texas ranch to sign the measure in the early morning hours, applauded the dramatic legislative maneuver.
"Democrats and Republicans in Congress came together last night to give Terri Schiavo's parents another opportunity to save their daughter's life," Bush said at an event on Social Security in Arizona. "This is a complex case with serious issues, but in extraordinary circumstances like this, it is wise to always err on the side of life."

Activist judge alert?
Any predictions on the ruling?
Whatever he rules, I am sure it will be appealed immediately.
This whole issue can be reduced by one sentence:
In ANY end of life issues, ONLY a SIGNED LIVING WILL would suffice IN ANY CASE!!!!!
Hearsay? Ridiculous! We cannot convict a criminal on hearsay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just heard on KMJ news that the judge has ordered the re-insertion of the feeding tube.
Local news seems to think that there should be an update soon.
Thanks Jim to you and the Moderators for all the hard work on this and also for the March for Justice II. Maybe I will be able to get off work to go to the March...
I hope you are right--Fox is saying no ruling yet.
confirmation?
because this bill seemed like a waste of precious time, if they didn't know what judge would get the case, and that he was likely to decide Terri should be fed.
Mrs VS
FOX News is saying "The hearing has ended, but no ruling yet".
After 2 hours of testimony, there has been no decision--today.
I haven't felt this anxious since election night last November. God save Terri.
Why is this so damned hard for the pro-starvation folks to handle?
Living Wills have been around for long enough that everyone knows about them. If you don't have one, it's YOUR choice.
To say you have to get a LW OR your husband can say "Well, I know she would want it" is ludicrous. Especially since her husband said on Larry King he doesn't know what she wants.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall. Bet that judge is having kittens.
FoxNews just reported "the hearing has ended, but no ruling yet."

Heavenly Father - Please bless and keep Theresa Marie Schiavo safe - in the precious Name of Jesus Christ - Amen.
We need better judges, so those who care about Terri Schiavo should be there for the March to help change things for other Terri Schiavos.
This is not a good sign....that tube needs to go back in NOW.
YES!
