One might define "brief life of grievous suffering" to apply to anyone ever born.I believe the correct quote would have been "...the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." From Hobbes' Leviathan. I guess if you subscribe to that outlook, the culture of death would make sense.
