Syria says U.S. inciting trouble in Middle East

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Moallem says the United States is instigating trouble among Israel's Arab neighbors to serve Israeli interests.

"I do not think that Lebanon and Syria would be in a trap unless there was a U.S. scheme to instigate trouble in Israel's neighboring Arab countries in order to serve Israeli interests," Beirut daily As-Safir Monday quoted Moallem as saying Monday.

In Algiers for an Arab summit that opens Tuesday, Muallem said: "By instigating problems in the region, the U.S. will help Israel complete the construction of the separation barrier and deny the Palestinian people their legitimate rights."

Moallem denied Syria had a hand in the Feb. 14 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, saying, "Syria was greatly affected by Hariri's slaying and lost an ally and partner."

"The accusations are unfounded ... No charges can be considered unless there is evidence to back them up," he added.

The multi-sectarian Lebanese opposition has blamed Syria and the Syrian-backed regime of Lebanese President Emile Lahoud for Hariri's slaying in a massive Beirut car bombing.

I don't recall the USA doing much in Lebanon's behalf until the former Lebanese PM was killed. Syria is responsible for the most of the terrorists in Iraq.

Not quite. We pushed thru the UN security council resolution telling Syria to withdraw from Lebanon. Granted, it's the UN, but it was something. In addition, Bush has put all tyrants on notice with his speeches, beginning two years ago in Whitehall England.

If I recall, the Palestinians were not exactly treated as royalty by Jordan or the Egyptians.

They blow up the former President of Lebanon, and accuse us of inciting trouble. Pretty ironic.

Why not?  They behead innocent foreign workers and are a "religion of peace".  Our guys put panties on someone's head and it's a war crime.

Of course, this is thru our own media.

You blaspheme. How dare you question the devotion of the Palestinian supporters, regardless of how they themselves have treated said downtrodden people in the past.

Stop trying to be logical. There is no place for it in this discussion.

This is true.. but until the people showed some effort after the assassination, I don't the USA was as open as we are now. I think Bush is looking for any excuse to tightening up things over there. Syria has a chance to do the right thing. It's not a good situation for Assad, and he's too weak of a person to stand up to the goons around him. But now is the time for him to take action.
