A husband and wife? This is 200 years of tradition, where a purported husband has a common law wife for 10 years, as well as 2 children by the common law wife, and yet is still recognized as the husband for purposes of making life and death decisions about his wife? We don't recognize polygamy in this country. And the question traditionalists should ask, like me, is how this purported husband was able to remain as the guardian in this case. Can anyone explain that? Very bizarre. So, don't tell us about the husband-wife relationship when Michael Schiavo moved on with another woman without the benefit of a divorce.
The courts etc etc etc didn't respect his wishes when this first happened ten years, so he was supposed to remain in his own vegetative state until she passes naturally?
If they had respected his rights from the very beginning his current situation wouldn't appear so unusual.
That anaology doesn't hold true, as each state has the right to determine the legality of common-law marriages. They are not recognized in every state.
Does anyone know if her parents, or anyone else, attempted to get a lawyere appointed to represent her interests? One who could have filed for divorce on the grounds of adultery. That sort of thing is done all the time for children who's parents may not be acting in the best interests of the child.
That is the point the parents should be attacking..... And if after her death, why couldn't they launch a civil case against the husband for taking her life when he clearly had selfish motive in removing her from lifesaving medical care?
