Americans broadly and strongly disapprove of federal intervention in the Terri Schiavo case, with sizeable majorities saying Congress is overstepping its bounds for political gain.
The public, by 63-28 percent, supports the removal of Schiavo's feeding tube, and by a 25-point margin opposes a law mandating federal review of her case. Congress passed such legislation and George W. Bush signed it Monday.
That legislative action is dintinctly unpopular. Not only do 60 percent oppose it, more, 70 percent, call it inappropriate for Congress to get involved in this way. And by a lopsided 67-19 percent most think the elected officials trying to keep Schiavo alive are doing so more for political advantage than out of concern for her or for the principles involved.

What the heck is that? ABC needs some kind of spell checker.....
"I thought less government intrusion into private lives was a major credo of conservatism. I miss Reagan and the good old days."
Congress acting Constitutionally gets called an intrusion. Guess some are really poll driven.
The link is to a pdf?
And since you don't like government intrusion, exactly how do you feel about a judge attempting to starve a woman to death?
ABC news polls and toilet paper share many uses.
What planet did they get that poll from?
Why was a court deciding whether a woman should live or die to begin with? Once you cross that line, you've got to expect that the legislature will have to be involved as well.
The law is, if you want this done, get it in writing. If that's considered too difficult--putting in writing that you want a life ended--we surely are the laziest SOB's ever born.
The same people who think it's just a piece of paper must think the same thing of entering the country illegally. No big deal, it's just a piece of paper, right?
So, you approve of putting someone to death without any provable evidence that's what they wanted? Why err on the side of death?
As one person said: Time is relevant--it depends on which side of the bathroom door you are on.
The important aspect here is if Government does nothing, that is tacit approval to terminate anyone who is "less than acceptable".
You Rights people think anyone who has a Death Sentence is allowed " All Possible Appeals". So we keep Teri Schiavo's case in State Courts?
My question exactly and how come I never get polled? I live in NY, third in liberal mecca land only to Mass and Calif......
Right. So if I were to decide to off a member of my family, I could just claim it was a 'private matter' and face no prosecution?
Geez.
501 adults surveyed, 4.5% MOE. What did they do, interview guests at a Tina Brown dinner party? In any event, I'd venture that fewer than 10% have a basic knowledge of the facts.
I thought FReepers were smart enough not to believe propaganda from the MSM.
I guess there's always going to be a few who ride the short bus.
ABC does not get it.
OR
Perhaps ABC and their bosses do not want the legislatures overturning court decisions. Why would a disney owned company fear the legislatures making laws based on conservative type principles? Why would a disney owned company fear a "culture of life".
I'm sure the mainstream liberal societal engineering media is quite please that their mischaracterizations of Terri and the plight and the actions taken by the Congress have been so successful. Evil walks upright and proud in America now, with an entire political party and the majority of media outlets promoting its interests.
500 adults on a Sunday......right.
Even if this "poll" were reflective of public sentiment, so what? "Pure democracy" is two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner.
