One thing,
You can reopen a capped oil well. It is just VERY ugly and hard to do.
no they won't. I work in the leasing business and the hybrid manufacturers can't keep them in the factory. SUV sales are going down. People see the writing on the wall.
That goes completely against the supply and demand model. If more oil is in the pipeline, prices should drop. At what point do people understand that oil is being used as a weapon against us?
Your SUV predictions coming true.
If lots of oil is found in ANWR, it's going to take a few years to build the infrastructure to extract it and transport it. So we're going to be dealing with high gas prices for a while. As far as oil being used as a weapon against us, our appetite for large gas guzzling vehicles is aiding those who would wield that weapon.
Wow, why are your prices so low. Wish we had those prices back. I just filled up at $2.69 a gallon.
That's extraction. You have to process it. You have to transport it. And high demand drives up prices, just like any other product.
That is great news. I've been hoping we'd see a repeat of the early 70's drop in gasoline demand. With enough hybrids on the road, gasoline inventories will grow dropping the price.
You said it.
The primary source is the Illinois Legislature (blue) and the Illinois Governor (also blue).
I'm in central PA and it's $2.05.
Frankly, I wouldn't mind if the income tax would be replaced by a consumption tax ... on motor fuels (kinda like the Europeans do it ;^).
Yes, I have little or no sympathy for those who choose to work many miles from home and then b*tch about the cost of getting there. They're probably the same type who build their dream home downwind from a pig farm and then hire a lawyer to do something about the stench.
Here's the real solution: Get away from oil as much as possible.
"Of course the best solution is to start drilling in Anwar."
That is just one small part of the equation, we go through 20 million barrels a day, ANWAR can produce 700,000 barrels out of 20 million so think of ANWAR producing more like 3% of our needs. Also, think of this as a 5 year gradual roll-out to reach this number.
Right after 9/11 we should have built massive synthetic oil plants and ethenol conversion centers. If we started it today we would be totally free from foreign oil in less then a decade and we could begin EXPORTING to other countries for profit.
Me either. They buy SUV's cause everyone has one and gas is temporarily low. Then the country has to engineer 80 percent of it's foreign and domestic policy around maintaining everyones right to drive their show ponies.
Hybrids are a joke. Watch and see how they fare when they're ten years old.
But, you're right; as more people give more consideration to MPG when buying a car, supply and demand will take care of the rest. So far, demand seems to be surprisingly elastic. We'll see.
If conservation ever becomes a status symbol, the Arabs can eat sand.
