The french are the most xenophobic people in the industrialized world. How can anybody who isn't French actually like the French?

There's a story between the lines too. Chirac wants French works on line - why doesn't France do it themselves? Declinismé indeed.

raising again the fear that French language and ideas will one day be reduced to a quaint regional peculiarity

That train's already left the station, Jacques.

Poor, poor Frenchies, doomed forever to live in our shadow. The more they squirm, the dumber they look.

And Shakespeare wasn't even French anyway. If Chirac really wants to increase cultural impact of the Francophone and the German-speaking world on the net, try something more constructive like The Smurfs (perhaps the only successful continental European mass entertainment icon since WWII).

Otherwise, forget it.

This is a hilarious waste of money. Chirac really doesn't have a clue.

His meetings and pronouncements are sounding more and more like the North Korean crowing about their incredibly successful "Juche Conferences" held frequently in places like Mexico City, New York, and Budapest, to the complete disinterest of the entire world.

The great French authors like Racine, Moliere, Corneille, Proust, Pascal, Baudelaire, Montaigne and Rabelais probably have a greater readership among American students of comparative literature than they do among Frenchmen themselves.

French bookstores are full to bursting with romance novels and detective stories like anyplace else.

God, the French suck. Can't they ever come up with their own ideas? Now they are reduced to copying Google?

Sorry Jacques, the future belongs to the Anglosphere and Sinosphere (Chinese Cultural Sphere). We read The Bible, Aristotle, Locke, and Confucius, and we watch Disney, Steven Spielberg, and Nicholas Tse. There may be some interests from time to time on talented French film stars like Juliette Bronche, but that's it.

Ah, I think that time has already come and gone... As usual, the French are right on top of things...
