My point being, it was posted he couldn't sue as he was a public figure, that he can sue for libel and slander.

Many public figures have done so and won or settled out of court.

Politicians are a different manner but he has not held elective office.

Politicians in Britain have more likely won damages for libel than those in the USA, right? Remember, General William Westmoreland of SC could not even win when CBS accused him falsely of falsifying the number of enemy dead in Vietnam.
