House Majority Leader Tom DeLay pledged Friday to hold Florida state judge George Greer in contempt of Congress for ignoring a congressional subpoena for Terri Schiavo's testimony, saying, "No little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress."
"The Congress will pursue this, if we have to hold him in contempt of Congress," DeLay told radio host Sean Hannity.
Pressed on whether he intended to hold Judge Greer in contempt, the top Republican told Hannity: "Absolutely, absolutely."
"We will do everything to enforce the power and authority of the Congress and no little judge sitting in a state district court in Florida is going to usurp the authority of Congress," he added.
Earlier in the day Judge Greer rebuffed the Schiavo subpoena, telling attorneys in the case, "I have had no cogent reason why the [congressional] committee should intervene." He claimed that the last-minute action on the part of Congress does not nullify years of legal proceedings.
But DeLay told Hannity, "This judge and the Supreme Court of Florida are well known to be liberal judges that have a different worldview and they're imposing their worldview on the law."
The top House leader said that "no sane person" could look at Schiavo and say she's in a persistent vegetative state.
DeLay called a lawyer for Michael Schiavo, who has pressed for years to have his wife starved to death, "the personification of evil."
You know as much as I. At this point, we wait and pray.
With all due respect, I don't know what the hell you're trying to say.
Why can't Bush give her a Presidential Pardon? Clinton handed them out like candy to criminals. Surely one could be given to spare a life.
Not really. They gave them 180 days to amend the law or warned that they'd impose their interpretation. That's obviously a case of legislating from the bench, but they didn't actually order the legislature to do anything.
There's only one whose abuse, whose contempt of Congress, is at issue - judge Greer. You present a logical fallacy. The issue is only - judge Greer. And of course - where's Jeb?
And if your wife had a lover and two children by him? Would that increase your trust in her to do the right thing by you? Your argument is ridiculous!
If you are in Florida get to Tallahasse and bang on the State House doors! That's where the solution lies.
But you don't see a conflict? Amazing.
I see a conflict if all that is true, but I wasn't there, the Judge was, and he was upheld on appeal.
Life is not always fair.
The law is not always fair.
But it is the best system we have come up with yet.
SO9
You must have missed this one.
This thing is spiraling so far out of control that all it is capable of doing is boring a huge, smoking hole in the ground.
I am appalled at some of the things I've seen come out of the mouths of ALLEGEDLY conservative lawmakers today, especially Mr. Delay, whom I formerly respected. I am further apalled at the almost insane nonsense, innuendo, tinfoil-hat conspiracies, and ignorant, vile foolishness being slung by some FReepers.
I can think of no other recent case that has so divided Free Republic, OR the Right as a whole.
IMHO, those fanatics and "activists" who worked so hard to push this thing to this level have driven railroad spikes into the credibility of the GOP and the conservative movement as a unit. Once again, our party is rent by narrow, single-issue maniacs Once again, we become laughing stocks.
Anyone who thinks that this is NOT the case, or who thinks "it's worth it!" is delusional.
I'd call that an "order."
Last summer, shortly after one of my sisters was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and her husband was diagnosed with a calcified blood clot in his brain stem, I made sure the rest of us had living wills.
My sister had all of her melanoma surgically removed and it hasn't come back. My brother-in-law, also a heart transplant patient, is still recovering. Both have had living wills for years.
If only there were a way to cut off Michael from being Terri's guardian, and put her guardianship in the hands of her parents or siblings, then we'd see justice served. There must be evidence that he's violated his duties as a guardian, right? For instance, he violated the law by not allowing the rehabilitation for Terri, even though it is against Florida law to deny rehabilitation to incapacitated people.
(from http://terrisfight.org)
"FACT: Florida Statute 744.3215 Rights of persons determined incapacitated:
(1) A person who has been determined to be incapacitated retains the right
(i) To receive necessary services and rehabilitation.
This is a retained right that a guardian cannot take away. Additionally, it does not make exception for PVS patients. Terri has illegally been denied rehabilitation - as many nurses have sworn in affidavits."
Isn't this enough to sever his guardianship?
Give 'em hell, Kimmie, I'm with you. The wierdos have shown up for this thread and are not bothing to inform themselves by reading the links.
They aren't interested in info. They all appear to be about 17.
Well, Chief Justice Moore was actually removed from office by representatives of the State of Alabama.
This is a tragic, difficult case and I'm not Chief Justice Moore can be of much help here.
If you hired me as your attorney, I'd definitely advise you to put your wishes in writing, make numerous copies and give them to as many people who you could.
My advice is free on FR, but I don't give a warranty with it.
Terri's case wouldn't even be a case if she had done that.
Sing along... whistle why you work, Hitler was a jerk, blablablabla bit his weenie now it doesn't work.
Check out the Archon. It is important that you know what and who the nine are. It is not what you think. It is not a good thing to be.
Then file a copy with your attorney. C'mon...
