Exactly, welcome to unchecked democracy. On the whim of the majority your property, liberty.. and now even your life can be taken away.

Yep. I don't want to digress too much, but that is the exact problem with Canada. It's only the popular vote, basically, and the majority party can pretty much do what it wants (nominate buddies to important positions and to the Senate).
At least in the U.S. we have things like the electoral college, Senate confirmations of judicial appointments, etc.
Obviously the system isn't perfect but believe me (and this is just my opinion based on experiencing the Canadian health care system first hand, and reading plenty of legal decisions here), if Terri lived in Canada she would have been dead a long time ago.
