This child certainly needed to be restrained, but cuffed and hauled away?

Yeah. lol. Maybe someone should look into why the kid was angry. Maybe her mom's single and a flaming lib. Or maybe she has two of them.

The district's campus police should have been called to help and not local police, he said. Bessette said campus police routinely deal with children and are trained to calm them in such situations.

One would like to think that the district's kindergarten teachers were trained to calm tantrum-throwing 5-year-olds.

"They set my baby up."

Ay, there's the problem. The mom.

" "We never want to have 5-year-old children arrested," said Michael Bessette, the district's Area III superintendent."

That's a candidate for Quote of the Day.

Oh, oh self esteem training gone haywire!

Expect to hear more about this. Kids are NOT being disciplines and many are OUT OF CONTROL even at this tender age.

"Wasn't it better in the old days when she just could have been spanked, cried it off and gone back to class having learned a lesson -- don't act like that or you'll get a whuppin."

This was the age when parents knew they were responsible for their child's actions.

Then when you got home you got it twice as hard.
We also could carry knives to school and never had a problem.

"Actually, it is the child's parents who should first be punished."

I wouldn't be opposed to cuffing the parents and putting them in the back of the cruiser instead. :)

Outrageous!! More and more schools demonstrate the lowering of value placed on children.

Many of these stories that get posted about children being arrested do not include the face that due to mainstreaming, there are mentally ill and retarded children at schools and they are out of control. Which is one of the reasons why they used to have special schools of their own.

Oh come on!! She's 5, and only 40 pounds, you don't think this is a bit extreme? She definately needs discipline, but arrested?? cuffed???

Yeah, and the thing is, the schools want to teach anything goes, and self esteem is all important. Kinda hinders a parents ability to discipline. Why do we discipline our children in the first place, but so they will be able to exercises Self Discipline. The left doesn't support self discipline in any way shape or form.

Her hands were bound with plastic ties, her ankles in handcuffs

You've gotta be freaking kidding me. How on earth do you let a five year old girl punch you in the stomach?

...hey being 'cuffed and stuffed in a police cruiser when you're 5 sure beats "time out"! Think about all the cool peer notoriety you'll get when you're back in school THE VERY NEXT DAY (if libs have anything to do with it).

Comment on the Obvious: This is what happens when the authority of teachers over student discipline is removed. Can't spank, so then it must become a law enforcement issue. Arrest and charge the little children for child-like behavior. Next thing, they'll be charged as adults and sent to jail as punishment.

Or shot. Let's see, this is a FIVE YEAR OLD GIRL. If nothing else, simply hold the child until they vent their anger.

I was thinking that also, if she was special needs and out of control. It's hard as a teacher to deal with a classroom of "average" kids, let alone a few that need 100% of your attention, and who you don't know what will happen. Last year when I was subbing I went in for a second grade teacher who had a very violent child in her class. The whole class suffered, but because he had an IEP (I forget what they said was wrong with him) and 2 lawyers for parents, the district had its hands tied. When I was there he threw a chair at his aide. The kids acted as if it was normal.
