A handful of Democrats decided late yesterday to begin to leverage the life of Terri Schiavo in an attempt to win concessions on certain provisions of other Senate action.

The narrower measure does what everybody wants done.
No, the narrower bill is similar to the one the Florida legislature passed and the Florida Supreme Court said violated the Florida constitution. Since the federal court will be using Florida law, they would look at their decision and strike this one down automatically.
The only reason Dem Senators agreed to anything is: 1) They can lie to voters that they tried to help. 2) Since it was different from the House bill it would not have any effect. The Senate Dems were going to put differences in the bill for that reason no matter what the House passed. and 3) They could blame House Republicans for overreaching.
Now leaving the House no choice but to pass the Senate bill, House Dems won't just accept a voice vote. The recorded vote will show Pro-Death Democrats and Republicans will vote down the bill. But they will claim to voters that they were all pro-Life by passing the first bill but the bill the Senate handed them was obviously unconstitutional.
Does that clear up the game for you?
