BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - The New York Giants apparently have changed their mind about Plaxico Burress.
ESPN on Thursday is reporting the Giants have signed the premier wide receiver remaining on the open market to a six-year contract worth $25 million.
According to the report, the deal includes $8.25 million in guaranteed bonuses.
The signing would come a week after Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi announced in a statement posted on the club's website that the franchise was ending its pursuit of Burress and going in a different direction.
Burress, 27, spent his first five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, catching 261 passes for 4,164 yards with 22 touchdowns. He battled a groin injury this past season and had 35 receptions for 698 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games.
Burress, who also drew interest from the Minnesota Vikings following their trade of Randy Moss, enjoyed his best season in 2002, establishing career highs in receptions (78) and yards (1,325).
In New York, the 6-5 Burress would help form a solid duo along with Amani Toomer while also giving quarterback Eli Manning a big-play target.
Kewl.
Peep this.
If he scores 1TD, that would be 1 more than Toomer and Hillard did combined last year.
Manning...ha ha
I know. Quite pitiful. That has to stop. I'm going to San Diego to see them play this year.....
Had to. Giant wide receivers had zero ( that's right... ZERO) TD catches last year. Plax was the only possible upgrade out there. Eff David Terrell.
Great off-season for the G-Men so far... got Antonio Pierce from the Skins for MLB, Kareem McKenzie from the Jets for RT, the Falcons kicker whose name escapes me because I'm on my 3rd rum-and-coke, and now Plax. GO BIG BLUE.
Now if they cut Toomer that would make the perfect off-season.
Y'all be hatin' Eli soon enough, just watch.
Gonna miss him with my Steelers. Too bad they had no way to fit him within the salary cap.
I always liked Amani, but what happened last year? From what I heard, he's the first to take the blame and was embarrassed by his performance this past season. Vows to come back big this year. We'll see.
Did you notice how few yards Giant receivers had after the catch? The last three games, Eli was throwing great, would have 22-25 completions... yet only 200 yards passing. Because the receivers weren't doing ANYTHING. Nobody made a play ALL YEAR.
I would wager good money the Giants were last in the league in yards after the catch, with the Jets right next to them.
totally over paid for this 3rd down headcase
By signing Plexiglass the Giants got one of the most overrated stiffs in the NFL. What a waste of money...
That's about half the money he was looking for...
