WASHINGTON - President Bush's $2.6 trillion budget plan working its way through Congress is dishonest and violates the core values of average Americans, Sen. John Kerry, Bush's former rival for the presidency, said Thursday.
"This budget is like an Enron budget: smoke the numbers, cook the books, hide the truth and hope no one finds out," said Kerry, who was last year's Democratic presidential nominee.
Kerry criticized the Republican leadership's priorities in a budget that includes proposed cuts in health care and education and up to $106 billion in tax cuts over the next five years.
And he said the budget fails to acknowledge ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan that could cost up to $400 billion over the next 10 years, as well as the cost of Bush's key priority Social Security reform.
The Massachusetts senator said the budget will pile up almost $6 trillion in new debt, while giving tax cuts to the rich.
In response, Republican National Committee spokesman Brian Jones said, "It's disappointing that John Kerry would employ such overtly partisan and obstructionist rhetoric at a time when most Americans want to see Congress engaged in solving problems, not over-the-top attacks."
Republican leaders argue that the plan preserves tax cuts that have wide support across the country and works to curtail spending that exceeds budget limits.
Kerry, who worked unsuccessfully with other Democrats and at times some Republicans this week to defeat specific provisions in the budget proposal, said the debate "should remind all Americans that Washington does not always work for them."
"Honesty, opportunity and responsibility were all cut from this budget," Kerry said in a speech to the Center for National Policy.
Sorry it didn't post the 1st time. My goof! :(
I don't recall Dukakis or Dole making news everytime they opened their mouths (post election). Why does this idiot still get coverage. His comments are always wrong, silly and out right fabrications. I hope his secret botox usage eats away at his brain
Hmmm. Must have cut the windsurfing subsidy.
Kerry who?
Where does Traitor John get his information, from one of the many serfs employed in his wife's palaces, estates and compounds? Or, it may come from the Viet Cong intellegence servicess that spy in America and then report back to Hanoi. I believe Kerry is cc'd on most reports.
Dear Mr Kerry :lets speak of dishonesty: Have you signed the form to allow us to see your records yet? Remember you promised.
Shouldn't he be out hunting something? Too early for Easter eggs but there's bound to be something in season for an flannel-wearing, gun-toting, all-around he-man like him to stalk...
I wish I could photoshop!
Did anyone tell him that he lost?
Near as I can tell, Dan Rather never called Ohio for Bush.
Hey senator, have you released your records by signing the 180 like you promised Imus and others? No? I wonder why? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
This part made me smile. Much like "last week's leftovers."
He never promised Imus, he promised Tim Russert.
Like either one of them would know the first thing about core values.
Thank you God for letting me live to see the day when the Repubs have complete control and are watching the Dems further destroy themselves.
That must be it. Think we should tell him or just let him keep making a fool of himself? Nah, let's not tell him.
"...smoke the numbers, cook the books, hide the truth and hope no one finds out,
Sounds like Kerry's campaign.
It's amazing how familiar the DIMs are in the way of corruption..."
I was thinking it sounded a lot like his military record (the tiny, highly edited and exaggerated bits he let the world see, that is)
Kerry has been peddling this crap in the local (western Massachusetts) papers, which they dutifully entitled "'Dishonest' Bush budget ignores needs of the nation."
I am sure it was "accidental" that they put Bush and dishonest together, even with the quotes. No mention of how the Enron excesses occurred under Clinton, and the prosecutions only came with a Bush administration. Not a peep out of Kerry when Enron was doing the nasty, under new accounting rules proposed and pushed through Congress by Chris Dodd.
All the same soundbites are recycled for the local paper. Naturally, I wrote a pointed response to same. Maybe it will get published........
