Commenting on today's assassination attempt against him, Anatoly Chubais, head of RAO Unified Energy Systems of Russia, said: "I understand quite clearly who could have staged this attack. The main thing I can say today is that all I did, both regarding the reform of the country's energy sector and efforts to unite Russia's democratic forces, I will now continue to do with twice the energy."
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Anatoly Chubais, head of Russia's state power monopoly, survived an assassination attempt on Thursday by unknown assailants who detonated a roadside bomb and sprayed his convoy with a hail of automatic gunfire.

He speaks bravely. Sounds like a good man to have on your side. I don't know the issues involved, however. Is he a good guy? (Probably, since assassins tried to kill him.)

Sometimes people stage assassination attempts for publicity, or to gain sympathy. I wonder if this is the case.

Otherwise, it seems like a sloppy job.

That looks like the good track. How he kept his job so far is an enigma

Re #6

The guy was called "vampire" by his wife during her interview several years ago.:) I no longer find her remark funny.

No, I don't believe Putin was who he had in mind and this is not Putin's style. Putin and Chubais just met recently to discuss the energy situation in Russia and Putin finds Chubais too politically useful. Chubais does has a serious rival politician called Alexander Lebed. Lebed is a former general and a populist who seems to promote more state control. I can't see where a man like Lebed, with military training and connections would of missed like this. I would think that Chubais would now be dead if Lebed was behind it. I agree with the comment that this might be staged, I tried to find a more detailed account of the attack but couldn't find one.

Well, nobody's perfect but on sum I'd classify him as a 'good guy'. All depends on who one wants to listen to. Here's an American version (yeah yeah, I know it's PBS, but it's Chubais himself responding to the questions). And here's a Russian version with a bit different slant.

In short, at the time of the fall of the Soviet 'Empire' he would have definitely been on any conservative's good guy list because he championed Yeltsin and the privatisation of the Soviet economy. But the devil is in the details as they say, and the voucher system he set up to transfer Russian industry from the 'state' to the people was corrupted by high rollers (and the Russian Mafia?) and most people got nothing. But he's now chairman of their biggest power company; does that mean he's simply a smart cookie, or is he one of the corrupters?

I don't personally know the answer to the above question, but it seems sure that, given Pooty-poot's backsliding to Soviet-style command and control, that Chubais and Putin are on opposite sides of the fence.

Alexander Lebed got killed a few years ago when his helicopter crashed.

I apologize, I had just remembered that they were at each others throat in the past. I had read a article about Lebed a few years ago and remembered his name. I still don't think that it sounds like Putin. It serves me right for trying to come up with a alternative without researching my comment.
