If I am going there, I would go in armed to the teeth, in convoy, and invite the japanese government to sail as part of our convoy. There is still a right of "innocent passage", and a right of self defense.

I am ignorant here of maritime history, custom and law.
My impression is that the strait of Malacca has been used by international sea commerce since the age of exploration.
Are the straits Malaysian territory? If yes, when did it become so?
