Think of it this way divide Alask in half geographicly, and then TEXAS becomes the third largest state in the union. For being of the coast of Mexico it sure is cold up here.

I see price per barrel at $25 by May

You may be right.

It seems unlikely, though.

We can hope. I'm Irish. I always look at the bright side of the blight.

"I hate tearing up the Earth..."

The Earth is just a big wet rock with resources on it and in it that we need.
Get that "Mother Earth" nonsense out of your head.

"and can we finally get solar energy to be practical and affordable?"

No, and we probably never will.

We have tried this before and the producers lost their butts. If the big companies believe that $50/bbl is here to stay, you can believe that the oil shales will be exploited.

Granted :^)..the pioneers of industry, have always taken the brunt of $$$$, very generous tax breaks/long term basic research (slurry/refraction) gov. reseach is needed. Conservation is only a short-term/stop-gap measure, a increased/new supply (of cheap hydrocarbons) is the answer.

"In a truly Capitalistic system, there would be no restrictions on marketplace entry. Refineries, may wish to restrict entry through political connections, but that is not a failure of the marketplace, but of government. You seem to put the onus on companies, when you should really be putting the blame on government. Enviro nuts and regs definite inhibit development of new refineries. That is again a fault of the government. In an open marketplace, there would definitely be more refineries. The same "stupid" arguments in the past about 100 mile per gallon carburetor always lead fools to think it "big companies" that is the problem. In reality, it is big government. There is no more powerful single force in this land that the massive federal bureaucracy. If we had a country as our Founders intended, you would find companies from time to time petitioning Congress to have "laws" past to favor them. The difference between then and now, is, almost 100% of the time, Companies would be told "too bad, competition is good,.. now get lost." Much of the power that now resides in Washington would be gone if government was limited as our Founders intended."

In the past couple of decades, when a company became successful due to its better people, better research, better products and better services, the government would hammer that company with restrictive legislation or actions by the Justice Department at the federal and state level.

At first that company would send armies of lawyers and lobbyists to the state capitols and DC to get the government to ease up on them.

In the game of political extortion, there is only one way to get the government parasites off their corporate backs.

That way is massive $ donations to the politicians, massive $ donations to the phoney non profits backed by the same politicians, and massive PC activities instead of reasearch, product and and service improvement.

After a few years of the above, any go go corporation decides that Fascism is better than capitalism. So their CEOs and boards get into bed with the politicians to get government protection instead of laws/actions against them.

During the Clintoon years, this process was rampant and massive.

Agreed. But that still doesn't make him right on the issue. As a constituent, it's my responsibility to make sure he understands that.

Well, it is either drill in anwr or start breeding horses for everyone. People are mobile and need to have it. It also needs to be at a more reasonable price.

I called Kerry's office, they said the matter had been voted on and drilling will occur. I said that was the best news I've heard since John Kerry lost the election.

Thank GOD! Now, LET'S ROLL!

This should have been done 4 years ago, we wouldn't be facing 2.39$ a gallon gas in freaking BFE Oregon and Diesel prices in the 2.60$ range if the flippin Dims had seen the light. At least we can outright defeat them now! Time to even the Judicial Nominee process back to where it should have been! 50-50 vote up or down!

Anyone know how Senator Smith (R) Oregon voted? Better look that up.... If he flipped I am going to be VERY disappointed.

Thank you for some very good observations. Have you noticed any rollback of this problem since GWB took office? Our great Republic could achieve so much more if only government would get out the way and leave the risk takers do their thing. Of course, tort reform wouldn't hurt either :)

Thanks for your kind words.

Turning this around with big corporations is like trying to turn an Air Craft Carrier doing over 30 knots around. It takes a long time.

However, when people who control these organizations get booted out by their boards, get arrested and get long sentences, we will see some changes. The problem is once this "love the government" virus infects a company, it becomes part of the corporate culture. Often that virus never leaves until the company goes bankrupt.

However, don't hold your breath. We do not invest in the Dow (DIA) or any company that makes up the Dow. Also these biggies and their impact on the S&P 500, (SPY) are like negative anchors. That is why we are invested in mutual funds which invest good small and medium cap companies.

We apply the same principle to Euro investing. No to companies controlled by the French and German. The Eastern Europe fund, EUEYX and the Austrian ETF, EWO, have been excellent investments.
