Bush Recommends Wolfowitz to Head World Bank
By William Branigin Washington Post Staff Writers Wednesday, March 16, 2005; 11:47 AM
President Bush said today he is nominating Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul D. Wolfowitz to be the next president of the World Bank, tapping one of his administration's most controversial figures as the U.S. choice to head the 184-nation institution.
Bush confirmed the recommendation of Wolfowitz at a news conference this morning after a senior administration official had disclosed that the president was putting the name forward. The official said Wolfowitz wants the job and that no one has yet been chosen to replace him at the Pentagon.
Bush revealed his choice in response to a question at the press conference, an unusual way for a president to first make public such a nomination.

I think the RATS and the media arm of the RAT party have gotta be getting tired of being poked in the eye. I love it!!
Yes, this should really be worth the money!
did anyone see the News Hour tonight? the anti-wolfowitz guy they had, cavanaugh, predicted disaster for the nomination, while ross said it was a good thing.
No, but it is hard to tell what this is really all about. Iraq has been anything but a success. And, the Devil still hasn't been paid yet.
Figured if Willie can pull an idea out of a hat so could I. Just funnin'
Great man or not a great man, Jefferson's ideas weren't always liked or supported by many of the other Founding Fathers. I suppose you'd call their writings bullcrap as well. I suppose you would call their assessment of his overall character hateful toward the constitution. And you threw me in with them. Thank you.
Please tell me you are joking.
I didn't know what to think of this, until I saw some pencil-necked geek on PBS news last night absolutely frothing at the mouth.
He said this was "A slap in the face to the whole world."
That's when I knew Bush has done a good thing!
Looks like no one replied, probably because not too many know what the world bank actually does. I don't recall it in my civics classes. As far as I know, it gives loans to third world countries for various types of development. But where it gets its money and who controls is is the stuff of one-world conspiracy theories. And Wolfie is the quintessential pick as far as one-worlders go, boisters all their theories.I suppose I could look it up on the web but I've got too many other things to look up.
Somehow I doubt that The World Bank will be financing some crackpot third world project that amounts to throwing the money down a hole. There will likely be linkage between conduct and loans.
Thanks Rennes: Found a Wall Street Journal this AM.There is something on the editorial page favoring Wolfowitz but not really telling us what the Bank does or where it gets its funds. If I were a betting man (adding to my cynicism) I would guess the "Bank's" job was to bribe petty third world tyrants into having some respect for the rule of law
and property rights so that some progress can be made without resorting to the sword. As for the source of their cash....let me guess.
I haven't read it but "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" has a great expose of the bank etc. I heard part of an interview recently by its author John Perkins, now a NYT Best Seller.
Thank you. I have been letting certain journals slide so that I can read books and will jump on this one. Appreciate.
I think Wolfowitz has earned Bush's trust.
