Weird, 'cause when I look up "bastard" in my dictionary, the first definition (which is the most common and the accepted) is "an illegitimate child."

I'd say take it up with Merriam-Webster.

There are no illegitimate children, only illegitimate parents. The concept of a bastard is out of touch with the mainstream and I would say that to stigmatize a child as a bastard would be likely to promote more abortions. If you value life you would not blame the innocent child.
