Actually it would be quite interesting if Reid attempted to corral his 45 Dems into shutting down the Senate. A number of those Senators are in somewhat precarious positions for re-election in 2006 (Bill Nelson, Ben Nelson, Maria Cantwell, Kent Conrad, not to mention the open seats in NJ, MN and MD).
Further, there are others up in 2008 who would not want this on their resume (Mark Pryor, Mary Landrieu, Max Baucus, and Tim Johnson). If Frist plays this right and gets the blame properly assigned, Reid could be relegated to further obscurity in the future. Of course, this assumes Frist can keep his own troops in line.
I also remember that a good portion of the White House staff, including people tasked specifically to the job of keeping Big Bill's pants zipped up, were sent home as well. One of the staffers left on the job was a certain young intern named Monica Lewinsky...

If the Dems insist on shutting everything down, we should form a coalition, travel to DC, and install ourselves in their offices to keep things going until they get their thumbs out of their ***. We'll just go ahead and vote on stuff, too, and tell all their supporting lefties who call or email in their support to take a hike.
While we're at it, let's kick the Republicans out, too, and take over the whole dang place. Both sides are worthless.
From what I've read, Senator Byrd's comments about Republican's being Nazi's REALLY torqued off even moderate (read RINO) GOP Senators, and the votes are now there.

VP Humphrey had 68 Democrats, and 20 more RINOs, in his Senate. That was the most radical, change-oriented Senate in the history of the Republic.
VP Humphrey's ruling was not upheld by the Senate.
Why do you think that VP Cheney, with 55 Senators in the majority and NONE from the minority, will be able to pull this off?
You are asking individual Senators to surrender power. They have never done so in the past, and they aren't going to do so now.
