You probably heard about the case of Brian Nichols, the violent rapist, who murdered one cop, a judge and a court stenographer and shot in the face another deputy in a dramatic break from custody in Atlanta.
It was a big story.
It was a big shock to everyone that a prisoner of his reputation could pull off a stunt like this resulting in the deaths of three and probably a fourth person, a Customs agent, found dead in his wake the next day.
It shouldn't be a shock.
It was all quite predictable because of what sounds like politically correct police work.
First of all, meet Brian Nichols, all 6 foot 1, 210 pounds of him. The 33-year-old was in jail since August on charges of breaking into his former girlfriend's apartment, binding her with duct tape and raping her. Please note he took her hostage.
He was being retried and faced possible life imprisonment, after a first trial ended in a hung jury earlier in the week.
Because of a history of violence, Judge Rowland Barnes had asked authorities to provide extra security for him. Nevertheless, he was permitted to wear civilian clothes for his court appearance, despite the fact that he was found to be hiding two hand-made knives in his shoes the day before.
He also had a history of courtroom disruption.
In addition, he was escorted to the courtroom by a single female sheriff's deputy. He was not wearing leg shackles and his handcuffs were removed by her before he entered the courtroom.
Nichols wrested a gun from a deputy, shot her in the mouth and burst into the courtroom before shooting Barnes and a court reporter. A second deputy was shot and killed outside the courtroom.
Nichols is believed to have killed another man, a Customs agent, before he was recaptured Saturday.
With all due respect to the female deputy who lies in critical condition after being shot in the mouth by Nichols, may I ask a few simple questions that no one else is asking?
Why would one female deputy be assigned to escorting a monster like Nichols into a courtroom? Why would he be permitted to wear civilian clothes? Why would he not be shackled? Why would the judge's explicit request for extra security be ignored? Why would the fact that he was hiding two homemade knives the day before his court appearance not be taken into consideration?
I'm afraid I know the answers to these questions.
It is because of political correctness that blinds the judicial system to basic security concerns.
In most courthouses in this country, ordinary, law-abiding people are screened for weapons by metal detectors before they enter the buildings. Yet those most likely to grab and use weapons are treated with kid gloves because of years of societal conditioning by American Civil Liberties Union-style lawyers who tell us it is unfair to prisoners to force them to make appearances in courtrooms while shackled and in prison garb.
We've also been told by feminists that female police officers are just as tough and just as qualified as their larger male colleagues. No thought is given to the fact that women, even the toughest of them, are no match for a monster like Nichols.
There are lessons here for civilian policing policies. There are lessons here for the military. There are lessons here for all those who believe there are no physical differences between men and women.
Four people are dead today because too many of us want to play pretend.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Atlanta is a mess altogether.
Maybe things will change if an ACLU laywer gets shot in the face.
That this was able to happen is a travesty!
Atlanta is a liberal cesspool. Thank God I live WAY away from Atlanta/Fulton County.
Let's face this too: Jobs in our courts are what Mike Dukakis used to call "good jobs at good wages". Court work isn't supposed to be taxing. You think these court officers got top-notch training and received ongoing continuing education? I don't think so.
Did everyone see the female FBI agent that was escorting Nichols when he was captured?
They never learn.
