She sympathizes with a cold blooded, misunderstood murderer. She said he had a human side. When he did what he did he was no longer fit to be in human society. Her sympathies should have been about the victims. They had a human side until Nichols put an end to it.
She does have sympathies for the victims. What you don't get is that she is among the victims, one who had a pretty scary weekend.
