Muslim group aims to mediate with Dell

A national Muslim organization says it want to mediate with Dell Inc, over 30 Somali workers who are at the center of a dispute over prayer at work.

The Council on American and Islamic Relations in Washington, D.C. sent an e-mail and letter yesterday to Dell president and chief executive Kevin B. Rollins after the Nashville newspaper, The Tennessean, reported that the workers walked off their jobs last month because they were forced to "choose between their faith and their employment."

The workers, who loaded boxes or operated forklifts at Dell's Nashville plant, requested time off to pray at sunset and were told they could not, said Ibrahim Hooper, executive director of the council.

Dell spokesman T.R. Reis said the Texas-based computer manufacturing firm has a longstanding policy of accommodating workers of diffrent religious faiths. He said Dell is working with the Metropolitan Human Relations Commission in Nashville "to better understand and resolve the issue."

"There were some contract employees at our operation there who evidently were involved in something that was an anomaly in terms of a dispute with their manager over prayer breaks," said Reid.

This cannot end well.

How they should be treated...?

Saudi Arabia - Conversion by a Muslim to another religion is punishable by death. Bibles are illegal. Churches are illegal.

Yemen - Bans proselytizing by non-Muslims and forbids conversions. The Government does not allow the building of new non-Muslim places of worship.

Kuwait - Registration and licensing of religious groups. Members of religions not sanctioned in the Koran may not build places of worship. Prohibits organized religious education for religions other than Islam.

Egypt - Islam is the official state religion and primary source of legislation. Accordingly, religious practices that conflict with Islamic law are prohibited. Muslims may face legal problems if they convert to another faith. Requires non-Muslims to obtain what is now a presidential decree to build a place of worship.

Algeria - The law prohibits public assembly for purposes of practicing a faith other than Islam. Non-Islamic proselytizing is illegal, and the Government restricts the importation of non-Islamic literature for distribution.

Jordan - Has the death penalty for any Muslim selling land to a Jew.

How about this as a solution. Have these workers man the Graveyard shift - Starting AFTER sundown and finishing BEFORE sunup. That way they can pray on their own time for as long as they want. Want to bet the incidents of praying will be way down under this approach?

Be careful when using the term "graveyard shift"when referring to people of certain religions.

Will Dell be tragically effected if they take the 5 minutes at sunset and pray?
Think of it as a big cigarette break.

Interesting question. These guys might not be popular on FR due to their religion. I wonder how people would be responding if they were Orthodox Jews who requested that their employer not schedule them to work on Saturdays?

Think of it as a big cigarette break.

Would you mind if I thought of it as a bathroom break instead?

>>prayer breaks<<

Ummmmmm, when did this start? I'm a catholic, I don't get a "prayer break". Does anyone get a prayer break? I DON'T THINK SO, hell, I can't even display a crucifix or any other religious symbols where I work let alone get down on my knees and pray.

IF Dell kow-tows to the Muslims...
I will NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THEM AGAIN!!
I have sent them a letter and an Email to that effect.
Don't know how you feel about Dell, but this is just another effort by Islam to infiltrate.. everything.

Burrkas anyone??

The Tennessean, reported that the workers walked off their jobs last month because they were forced to "choose between their faith and their employment."

Good, they can stay there. If 1 or 2 want to take a break that's one thing. All 30 of them at once ? They'd shut the warehouse down for that many minutes. Which means everyone would get a break. If the management makes exceptions for one group; they will have to make exceptions for ALL groups.

If I can't get time off to pray at work, why should they?
They're no more special than anyone else, why give them preferential treatment?

This has got to be one of the most insane things I've heard.
Thanks for the find Dana and the ping Cavtrooper.
