Dwight Gooden Arrested On Domestic Violence Charges

TAMPA - Police arrested former New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden on domestic violence charges early Sunday on Harbour Island.

Tampa police reported the incident occurred at 1 a.m. at 501 Knights Run following an argument between Gooden and his ex-wife, Monique Moore. Police said Moore threw a telephone handset at Gooden, and he punched her face with a closed fist, resulting in a bruise.

Moore refused medical attention and Gooden was arrested and booked, police said.

Gooden, 40, who grew up in Tampa, also played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees.

He pitched 16 seasons before retiring in March 2001. He works in player development in the Yankees' front office. Team spokesman Richard Cerrone said he had no comment on the incident Sunday.

In 2002, Gooden pleaded guilty in a Tampa court to reckless driving.

In 1994, he tested positive for cocaine and was suspended from playing baseball for 60 days. During his probation, he tested positive again and was sidelined for the 1995 season.

I don't know whose worse, Doc Gooden or Darryl Strawberry.

Both of them defecated away possible Hall of Fame careers.

24 wins, 4 losses, 268 strikeouts, and an ERA of 1.53 in Gooden's 1985 season, which was 20 years ago.

Fire his ass and let him rot away in the streets. You try to help people like Gooden get back on his feet and he still screws up.

Not true. Bush was declared winner of Ohio after midnight.

I guess some people just can't stand prosperity.

How many of us could get showered with $ and adulation in our 20s and not get corrupted? Pro leagues should pay salaries into an annuity that players can't touch until after retirement.

Tampa police reported...an argument between Gooden and his ex-wife, Monique Moore. Police said Moore threw a telephone handset at Gooden...

What? No mention of how fast the radar gun clocked the phone flying at Gooden's head?

...and [Gooden] punched her face with a closed fist, resulting in a bruise.

(And here come Mel Stottlemyre and Gene Monahan out of the dugout to take a look...;-)

I only wonder what it would be like to make that kind of money. I don't think if I made that kind of money it would have corrupted me enough to punch an ex-wife in the face. But I guess I really shouldn't comment on those topics because I never made that kind of money or had an ex-wife, yet!

Ah, yes, just as regular and comforting as the swallows returning to Capistrano; what would Spring Training be without a Gooden or Strawberry arrest?

If a woman doesn't want to get clocked upside the head, she shouldn't be throwing appliances at her husband. This is a basic principle of self defense. I don't love this women-can-get-away-with-anything attitude I'm seeing.

Maybe Gooden's girlfriend was merely trying out her new 'split-finger phone-toss' at Gooden...

Then again, we know nothing at all about this quarrel, do we?

Does Gooden have a history of coming in "high and tight" with his girlfriends and wives?

I don't recall any, and given that his other arrests are in the article, it looks doubtful.

Ahem. SHE attacked him first with an instrument used as a weapon. Was she hauled off to jail?

He's probably a dreadful jerk, but then again, so is she. But he'll be the only one up for punishment.
