Well, if I understand correctly, the house is situated on two blocks; I doubt HFH would have built it, if they weren't going to pass the fire code. Of course, the house sounds like it wasn't being taken care of, but I used to think it would be a hoot to go live on a plot of land in a little mud hut, with no heat/electricity/running water. I have since come to my senses, but it's not the government's place to tell me I couldn't.

As I recall from the earlier articles, HFH renovated an existing house; they didn't build it new. The family trashed it, and they appear to have done so again.
I don't think the government has any business telling people to have a heater, either ... but on the other hand, if they're lighting fires in trash cans for heat, and the old firetrap burns down, kills 20 people, and sets the neighbors houses on fire, who's gonna be sued? The city.
