Don't the Majority Have Rights Too? (Gypsies a privileged class in Britain)
The Daily Mail ^ | March 11, 2005 | Eric A. Posner

They are ordinary householders and desperate for help. Their village is blighted, their lives made a misery, their homes rendered almost worthless. And in their growing despair they challenge deputy Prime Minister John Prescott: come and see what you have done.

The shadow that has fallen on Wickford in Essex is painfully familiar. An illegal travellers' encampment, a neighbourhood scarred with piles of rubbish and the smell of sewage, a debilitating fear of petty criminality — these are now everyday experiences in villages across the land.

And where can the victims turn?

Political correctness decrees that travellers are given special treatment. Courts resort to the Human Rights Act to overturn planning rules. Councils are often too terrified of the huge legal costs to appeal. And a dishonest Government winks at the mockery made of the law.

No ordinary householder could hope to get away with so much as a small extension without planning permission. But travellers? They are almost encouraged to do as they please.

On sites across the land, they have brought bulldozers in, built permanent homes, spread tarmac, dug foundations, laid on power and sewerage — all without so much as a by your leave. Planning permission is sought only retrospectively.

And this is where the system descends into farce. Under the Human Rights Act, as interpreted by the Appeal Court, travellers can't be moved on, because such action would disrupt 'the right to family life'. So despite their flagrant breach of planning laws — and the devastating impact on settled communities — they are all but untouchable.

Head's Dismay as Travellers Set Up Camp on School Sports Field 'Quick Action' Vow by Councillors

Travellers have set up camp on a playing field used for sports by a Yorkshire primary school.

Yesterday there were more than 20 caravans in the car park of an industrial estate in Beeston, Leeds, and about six others had moved onto playing fields used by Hugh Gaitskell Primary School.

School head Kieran Ormston said: "Clearly the children cannot use the playing fields now. It stops their activities and after-school clubs."

Last October, a group of travellers caused outrage in the city after invading fields next to St Mary's Church of England Primary School, in Hunslet, used by schoolchildren, and swamped it and the area around the church and vicarage with debris and litter.

Empty gas canisters, tyres, car parts, nappies and other waste were dumped after the travellers broke down the fence to get in.

Yesterday residents and traders from the Enterprise Park Industrial Estate, in Moorhouse Avenue, Beeston, which is at the rear of Hugh Gaitskell Primary, were surprised the travellers had been able to set up camp so easily.

So much for the superiority of the European approach to solving social problems.

BTW, there is a format error in your link. Clicking on it calls up the pertinent error message.

Perhaps a digit didn't get copied when I did the cut & paste during posting.

And the chasm grows even wider between the ruling establishment and the public it is supposed to serve.

Unfortunately, the same conclusion could be penned to an article about how our ruling establishment favors illegal aliens.

Great Irony:six others had moved onto playing fields used by Hugh Gaitskell Primary School

Gaitskell was a major figure in the socialist British government in the 50's.

My ISP is AOL, so there is no telling where the real problem lies. The URL provided in response to my original post worked. So it might have been a incomplete cut and paste that was later corrected. Anyway, I got to read the article and that's really the important thing.

Yep. How is this much different than tacitly allowing millions of alien invaders to cut fences, rob homes, steal property and lay waste to our border regions?
